Is it illegal to mask your IP address?

My friend was surprised to know that I didn't have a VPN extension on my browser. He told me I should. I always thought about it, but I'm more concerned about my ISP knowing about it and cutting me off then if it's actually illegal.

reply

no of course it's not illegal, but if you used an unreliable vpn service and did something stupid on the internet you might end up in trouble so choose wisely

reply

I've seen a few extensions through the chrome web store. I'm not doing anything illegal, I just don't like being tracked by sites.

reply

i think a good free vpn should give you the minimum level of privacy, opera has a built in one actually. but if you want to be sure that you are totally invisible even from your isp then a paid vpn is what you should go for

reply

I don't care about hiding from my ISP as long as changing an ISP is legal. I don't want to get some call threatening to disconnect my service simply for doing so.

reply

privacy is a human right actually, there is absolutely nothing illegal about using a vpn

edit: ok turns out some countries actually don't allow vpn
China, Russia, Iraq and North Korea, restrict or ban the use of VPNs
hope you'r not from one of those :)

reply

Totally legal. There's even mainstream VPN commercials on tv now. I've been using one for 5 years now. They're terrific.

reply

There are some sites you visit that won't reveal content if you're using a known VPN address. And it can sometimes get in the way of your banking and shit where they really want to know you're not an imposter. You have to turn it off when you're doing that stuff.

reply

I guess more people don't use it because they feel their ISP's don't allow it like I did.

reply

I'm a pirate. I got a bunch of threatening emails from ISP tracking my shit. After I got my VPN, it disappeared.

reply

Through torrents or storage sites?

reply

got to use firefox web browser and duckduckgo search engine too for privacy, well thats what they want use to beleive at lease because chrome and windows is basically sells your data traffic, so use chrome as little as possible and if you can use linux or apple osx

reply

apple says they are good on privacy but it's more expensive

also stop shopping at amazon and stop shopping at walmart because of data is sold,
the whole data thing is worse than you think,
there other things you can do, get encryted email, and encrypted cloud service,

i don't do all of this but depends how much off the grid you want to be, id say buy stuff in cash if it bothers you that much, and theres ALWAYS bitcoin
