What are some good movies similar to "12 Years a Slave" and "Django Unchained"?

Looking for some really good movies with theme similar to "12 Years a Slave" and "Django Unchained".

Those two movies kept me glued to the screen from beginning to the end.
Chiwetel Ejiofor is a fabulous actor. And so are Leo and Jamie Foxx.

Whatever you remember, just make sure that they are well paced. Nobody likes slow drags. Well I don't.

The Birth of a Nation.

Haven't seen it so I don't know about the pace.

reply

I was contemplating watching that one. I guess I will. Thanks.

reply

Those 2 movies couldn't be more different in tone. 12 years a slave takes itself way too seriously.

Maybe Amistad is somewhat similar to 12 years a slave.

reply

The theme is same. Black slavery in America.

reply

Well, watch amistad then.

reply

I have been meaning to watch that movie for a long time now, somehow never came around it.
I guess I will watch it now that you have reminded me of it.

Green Book (2018)

reply

A good movie I am sure. But it’s complete opposite of what I am looking for lol

reply

I thought they have similar theme...

reply

How? The only thing common is a black man.

reply

Both are about a free northern black man having difficulties when travelling to the deep south. Different, sure... but I can't see how they're complete opposite.

reply

They are opposite because in movies mentioned by me are about black slavery. A black person is downtrodden and is being exploited and oppressed by while master. In Green Book the black guy is a popular pianist. He has respect, money fame. He is sophisticated and the white guy drives his car. You see how these moves are opposite?

reply

Ah, ok. So you wanted specifically black slavery movies, not just similarly themed.

2017's Detroit

Looks promising. I will check it out. Thanks.

Roots (1977 miniseries) and Roots: The Next Generations (1979).

Free State of Jones (2016) is also worth a watch.

reply

Roots is too old for my liking.
Free State of Jones is good movie but I have already watched it :/

reply

Are you asking for slave movies? If not, this is a solid flick https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069303/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1

reply

It's too old for my liking. :/
