What is the most visually stunning movies that you have ever watched? (Not necessarily VFX)

I am looking for a movie that you would wanna watch on a high quality display screen.
IMO Madmax Fury, Dunkirk, Revenant are some of the really visually stunning movies.
One could say Avtar was visually stunning but it's mostly CGI. It's a matter of personal preference. I would like to watch a movie that is visually stunning without too much hocus pocus like star wars and avatar. Also, I am not looking for old movies however visually stunning for their time because of the simple reason that they did not have the kind of highly quality cameras, back then.

GUYS GUYS ! I repeat, please avoid recommending movies that are over 10-15 years old.
They just did not have the modern cameras to capture stunning details at the time. A lot of you have mentioned old movies.

i'm probably primed to mention 'the passion of joan of arc' since it was brought up only yesterday in the silent film thread, but that was the first film that popped into my head.

i'd agree with fury road. in a time when so many large budget films have the same glossy, bland look, that is one that stands out to me.

a few others off the top...

stalker
a ghost story
my winnipeg
brand upon the brain
pan's labyrinth

reply

Most of the movies that you have listed are either pretty old or just too hocus pocus aka Sci-fi.
As I mentioned I am not looking for old movies for simple reason that they lacked the camera quality.

The Fall 2006.

reply

It's too yellow lol
But thanks anyways.

I agree wholeheartedly with Wint3rFir3. I will never forget the scene where the camera slowly panned out....and captured the view of a multitude of orange/red body bags! šŸ˜± This edge of my seat psychological thriller chilled me to the bone! I grimaced at the foul language, but I just gulped and continued to watch because the series had me gripped. I couldnā€™t let go! It received an 8.2 rating from the ā€œother placeā€ which I shall not name.

reply

@kspkap it may be a great movie. Idk. But is it a visual treat?

reply

Iā€™ve been away all day. Anyhow, maybe Iā€™m not sure what exactly what you have in mind. Visual treat? Depending on your taste it could be anything from porn šŸ„“to slasher movies or a combination of both...snuff films. šŸ¤¢šŸ¤® Canā€™t help you there...only a psychopath could. Or would the answer be more in the line of cinematography? You asked a strange question. Visual treat? I know not of what you ask...

BTW, what do you mean by ā€œtoo yellowā€?

The Assassination of Jesse James
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Shutter Island
Sin City
The Crow
Watchmen

reply

Shutter Island was good. I liked the imagery and also the movie.
I will consider watching Sin City.
As for The crow I doubt they had cameras that could capture ultra high quality images at the time.
Watchmen was a good movie.
I will check out The Assassination of Jesse James

reply

They did great at replicating the look of the graphic novel for Watchmen. I liked it.

Skyfall (2012)
Hero (2002)

reply

Sunshine looks gorgeous.

reply

2007 one? The trailer is mostly yellow.

reply

Iā€™m not saying itā€™s a classic, but the cinematography stands out imho.

reply

I am looking for movies which have stunning visuals. I am not into artistic videography. (like some black and white movies in today's time). However, I will check out the movie that you have suggested out of respect. May be I will I like it. Who knows.

reply

Yes it does. Andy. Visually, Sunshine is an homage to 2001. Also, most episodes of Game of Thrones, and Tron: Legacy. I agree with Stratego that modern movies look awful and are visually designed to appeal to cretins, who like a cartoonish image and not an accurate one. I sell and demonstrate the highest-end consumer video in the world, including projectors, and I know how consumers react. Also, House of Flying Daggers and Hero, both done by the same director. Andā€”and please donā€™t laugh until you look at itā€”the NBC series Emerald City, directed by Tarsem Singh. It has breathtaking visual composition and cinematography.

reply

Ironically, my next suggestion was 2001, so obviously I find a certain style aesthetically pleasing.

reply

2001 - itā€™s over 50 years of old and still looks beautiful.

reply

Yep!

I actually think recent movies look like crap. Overuse of computer effects and filters and whatnot that makes them look cheap.

The only movie I can think of that's not yet 15 years old is Om Shanti Om.
