Is Goodfellas responsible for Pulp Fiction and Boogie Nights?

The flashy camera tricks (whip pans, fast cuts, quick zooms, closeups of chopping/snorting cocaine, flashbulbs and freeze frames, long tracking shots), the tactful infusion of lesser know but infectious pop music, highly stylized sequences of lighthearted and quirky dialogue juxtaposed against bursts of intense violence, the fascination with material wealth and the downfall of central characters in pursuit of it. Boogie Nights obviously moreso but both would not exist with Goodfellas and to a lesser extent Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Casino.

I think if anything it was more a collective sense of nostalgia for the 60's and 70's at the time.

reply

I agree but what does that have to do with my OP?

Boogie Nights used the exact same formula only in the 70s/80s.

For me they are different types of films. What ties them together - for me - is era's they are set in. I like Goodfella's, can't stand Pulp Fiction and am meh about Boogie Nights.

I actually view Goodfella's as a pretty traditional form of storytelling which is why I like it so much.

reply

Agreed on the era they are set in, but what about the camera tricks and selective use of pop songs to fit each scene?

Pulp is set in modern day and is similar in its use of pop music and camera tricks as well as the juxtaposition of violence and everyday events

PT Anderson and Tarantino themselves have acknowledged Scorsese’s profound influence on them, Google it.

Goodfellas was a great film. However I didn't like Ray Liotta in the film.

reply

How could you like Goodfellas but not like Ray Liotta in it? Ray Liotta is Goodfellas.

No
