People keep telling me to watch the wire but

I have seen the first couple of episodes and there was nothing about it that felt original to me.

I thought it was just descent

I've heard many whose taste I admire rave about it. I haven't watched it because I don't think the quality will likely trump the content for me.

It may be you're not giving it enough of a chance. Seems like I recall people saying it was a slow burn, and you have to pay close attention to appreciate it. Mad Men was like that. I hated the first 2 episodes, and stopped watching it. Then a friend who knew my tastes said he thought I should keep watching because it was "my kind of show." So, I tried again and wow was he right!

Anyway, just saying it may be the same with you and The Wire.

Cat, I watched the whole series, and I’ve no interest in ever seeing it again. The acting was excellent, the writing was literate, but the only thing that interested me was Super Omar, the gay superhero. Nothing else; it was paint drying. It’s the kind of series that’s supposed to be “good for you.” Well, so is a colonoscopy. If someone enjoys The Wire, good on them. I’m not one of them.

Ah well, I may not like it either, R_K. For me it's that I'm not into the subject matter, so I'm not drawn to watch it.

I gave it a couple of chances, I think I will try it one more time. There must be a reason why so many people like it. But it just feels like any other cop/criminal show to me.

reply

It may not feel original or impactful anymore considering it has influenced things that exist now

reply

I started to watch it because I like Idris Elba, but he only had small parts so I quit.

The Wire was one of the best HBO shows. Stinger Bell is a great character from it and that actor is in a lot of movies now probably because of how good he was in it.

reply

I loved it and did not expect to at all

It was an all time crime drama

Why does it have to be original? But I'll tell you this, it is original. Everything about it is authentic, performed on location, written by people with personal knowledge of the issues, and sometimes even the actors have street experience. But that is only part of the reason it's exceptional. Even so, it's okay to not like something good, just like it's okay to enjoy something bad. We like what we like.
