Do you remember

What you said the very first time someone asked you what you favorite movie was? Not what it is now, but your very first favorite?

When I was in kindergarten, I was drawing something I claimed was from my favorite movie. When my teacher asked what that was, without hesitation, I said "The Neverending Story." I then asked hers and she said Eraser, which I had never heard of and didn't see until many years later. I like that my kindergarten teacher liked Eraser.

I can't remember for sure, but I think it was The Unsinkable Molly Brown. My mom loved musicals like The Music Man and The Sound of Music. She always bought the soundtracks and played them a lot. When we went to the movies it was usually to see a musical film. The first stage play I saw was The Sound of Music with Florence Henderson as Maria at the Schubert Theater in Chicago. Yep, I'm old.

reply

I've actually never seen Unsinkable...

I love Titanic and all things related, but musicals have got to really pack a punch with some great songwriting for me to like it. Songs good?

I adore the Sound of Music. My mom used to sing Edelweiss to me before bed when I was a kid.

I thought the music in Molly Brown was pretty good. Harve Presnell had a great voice. My favorite part because everyone looks like they're having fun, and Debbie Reynolds dances in an evening gown and heels yet keeps up with "the guys."

This was the very first movie I bought when we finally got a VCR and could actually buy - not just rent - movies.

Most likely Willow or Star Wars; watched those a lot.

reply

Yeah those two have been a big-time influence on me too.

Heidi (1937)

reply

I love the story of Heidi, but I am younger and I've only seen the 1993 version. I probably watched it a hundred times. Maybe I'll check out some other adaptations.

reply

back in the 70s they used to play the 1937 version all the time on TV.

Didn't one airing really mess up an American football game or something?

1968

reply

I'm not a football guy, and that's way before me, but my dad mentioned it once or twice.

The first movie I really liked was Shane.

"Christine" was definitely my favourite movie for a while, then "Cujo." Now I don't have an official favourite but a top 20 list.

reply

Love that movie !

reply

I don't remember. When I was a kid I watched tv alot, so most likely my favorite was a tv show and not a theatrical movie.

This is easy. McKenna's Gold. That was my first western and loved evert minute of it. I still love with all the back projections and fake mountains/etc.
