What did you watch this week sunshine? (03/10-03/16)

I smell it, I feel it, it's almost here, Spring! Oh what joy you bring, let's rejoice, go out, take a fresh breath and then get back to some serious movie watching. For this thread of course. Here is what I watched this week sunshines:

Mississippi Grind (2015 DVD): I liked 80% of this road trip/gambling movie but the last 20% wasn’t fully satisfying for my taste. The chemistry between the two actors elevates this uneven film and makes it a really enjoyable ride. 7/10

Ant-man and the wasp (2018 Netflix): This is an entertaining movie without being an impressive one. It’s fun but not really funny. There is some good action but not much intensity. It’s even with the first one and I’d compare it to Dr Strange or Ragnarok; worth a watch or two but that’s it. 6.5-7/10

Ready Player One (2018 Blu-ray): My, my, what a blast that was! I was scared I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the “in-game characters” but they were actually awesome and the action was even more awesome. Simply put; that was one of the most entertaining sci-fi action movies of the 21st century. In my humble opinion of course. My rating: 8.5/10

Jaws (1975 TV): You might have heard of this movie before but it’s about a shark named Jaws that kills people. It was pretty good but it’s an old movie, so it must have been even more awesome back then, especially considering the nice visual effects. Seeing it for the first time myself, I thought it was a good time waster because it’s 2 hours long but went by really quickly. I enjoyed it mainly because of the palpable chemistry between the three characters and I don’t want to say too much, in case you haven’t seen it but I recommend it. My rating: 7.5-8/10

Jaws 2 (1978 TV): I thought this one was not bad but not good either. Let’s say it’s an averagely-forgettable sequel. 5.5/10

Rate it, rank it, crank it but don't break it.

Spring is definitely on the way. 😁 We're regularly breaking 50 degrees here (that's 10° C for my friends outside the U.S.) and I'm loving it.

I've seen Ant Man & Wasp, RP1, Jaws and Jaws 2 and I agree with your ratings except that I liked RP1 a little bit less. 7/10 for me.

I watched Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald pretty much the minute it was available to rent on Vudu. I was disappointed. I don't want to give away any spoilers here, but I will say that I disagree with many of the choices that were made for the direction of the story. I was also very let down by how small of a part that Dumbledore had. On a positive note, I think Jude Law is very good in that role and I look forward to seeing a lot more of him (hopefully) in the next installments.

I don’t know how this series went under my radar but I was not aware it existed. I guess you prefered the first one?

reply

Yes, I rated the first one 8/10.

This is planned as a series of five movies. At this point, I suspect that they would have been better off with a trilogy because it does present a feeling to me of being stretched out.

It was still enjoyable and I’m in for #3.

Green Book - So much better than I anticipated. Highly recommended. It was also interesting to find out that the real Tony Lip played Carmine Lupertazzi in The Sopranos. 9/10

Back Roads (2018) - "In 1993, Harley's dad is shot dead and his mom goes to prison. He has to earn money and look after his 3 kid sisters. No college. Over 2 years, family secrets are slowly revealed. Will a good therapist be enough?" Depressing as hell. 6/10

Kilo Two Bravo (2014) - "Kajaki Dam 2006. A company of young British soldiers encounter an unexpected, terrifying enemy. A dried-out river bed, and under every step the possibility of an anti-personnel mine. A mine that could cost you your leg - or your life." Sad movie. Poor guys didn't deserve what happened to them. 8.5/10

I’m interested in Green book.
Kilo two bravo looks good, I hope I can catch it someday.

Kilo Two Brave is on Netflix.

I just realised I had watched 2 minutes of it and added it on my Netflix watchlist already. Nice!

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003) - 1/10

Man, was this awful! Incoherent plot, stupid jokes, obnoxiously bright cinematography, and excessive slow-mo are only a few of the problems of this godforsaken travesty. Despite its reputation, I do actually enjoy the first Charlie's Angels somewhat. Yes, it's stupid and low-brow but my nostalgic feelings towards it makes the film rather enjoyable. This on the other hand, is a catastrophe. I honestly think it's one of the worst films ever made. Watch it at your own risk.

Troy (2004) - 8/10

I don't know why this film got such a mixed response from critics and audiences alike, 'cause it's actually very good and quite underrated. The film deviates from Homer's original poem quite a bit, but tells a complex and engaging story of its own. The characters were all wonderfully nuanced and well-written, and the cast is uniformly excellent (maybe with the exception of Orlando Bloom). The action sequences are great, and the whole thing is shot gorgeously. Like I said, I really don't understand why this film gets such a bad rap.

Five Easy Pieces (1970) - 6/10

A bit undecided on this one. On one hand, it's a very well-acted and daring film that pulls no punches in regards to its portrayal of its deeply flawed protagonist. The struggle Jack Nicholson's character endures in the film is all too relatable. He's a lost soul who has simply not found his place in the world. He's stuck between his upbringing of a musically-oriented, high society family and the low-paying, uneducated slum that is his job. That in itself, is a great conflict. What stops me from being fully engaged in the film however, is just how unlikable his character is. Nicholson is a complete prick to almost everyone here. His girlfriend, his family, even his waitress (in the film's most memorable scene, I might add). By the time it ends, all I thought was "Why was I watching this guy?" I don't hate the film, I just its the main character.

reply

Yeah, I have no interested in Full throttle and only watched the first one to see Tom Green.

Troy is great indeed. 9/10

Jaws is a good movie, but Dreyfuss should've died.

TV Shows:

-Batman - marathon

-The Tony Danza Show (1997)

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-The Sopranos - "Members Only" and "Join the Club"
Dang, that was quite a shocking opening to season 6. Why don't I remember this?

leave Hooper alone 😊😊😊

Gladly. Stupid guy.

Replicas (2018) - A scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident. I think this enters the it's so bad, it's good realm. Just a bad sci-fi attempt. 5.5/10

Triple Frontier (2019) - Five former Special Forces operatives reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. You have to suspend belief for this movie just too many times. There some good actions scenes and such. 6.5/10

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - In the deep south during the 1930s, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them. Finally saw it. Clooney was great. Very funny in places. Charles Durning was great as Governor Daniels. 7.5/10

The Cowboys (1972) - Rancher Wil Andersen is forced to hire inexperienced boys as cowhands in order to get his herd to market on time but the rough drive is full of dangers and a gang of cattle rustlers is trailing them. Some of John Wayne's best acting in the first half hour of this movie. I have always loved this movie even with the ending. 7.5/10

Legend of the Lost (1957) - An American ne'er-do-well Joe January is hired to take Paul Bonnard on an expedition into the desert in search of treasure. John Wayne was good in this forgotten desert movie. However the script is weak and Sophia Loren was miscast. The guy who played Bonnard was terrible. 6.5/10

North to Alaska (1960) - During the Alaska gold rush, prospector George sends partner Sam to Seattle to bring his fiancée but when it turns out that she married another man, Sam returns with a pretty substitute, the hostess of the Henhouse dance hall. A John Wayne comedy which looks silly in retrospect (they had sound effects). Funny in places but just weak. Wayne was good in his role. Stewart Granger not so much. 6.5/10

Try and guess the theme.

Jaws is a masterpiece. I found Ready Player One to be dull and soulless.

reply

Yeah, the theme is clear: movies with at least one N in the title.

Or maybe: Movies you have no opinion on? Nah, I’ll stick with the first one. But here is my opinion on them:

Guardians of the Galaxy: 7
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2: 8
Doctor Strange 6.5
Captain Marvel NS
Captain America: The First Avenger: 6.5/10
Captain America: The Winter Soldier: 7/10
Captain America: Civil War 7.5/10
Black Panther 7.5/10
The Avengers 8.5-9/10
Thor Ragnarok 7/10
Avengers: Age of Ultron 8/10
The Incredible Hulk NS

Wow. You watched so many movies in one week! Goodness me where do you get the time.

reply

I don't usually start watching anything till about 9 at night. Less sleep, more movies. Works for me.

reply

Wow. I am half a sleep by 9pm and fully off to the world by about 10.30pm. I love movies but don't get much time with work and all. I most likely watch 0, 1 or at most 2 movies a week.
