shareIMDb probably lost 95 % of their visitors after deleting the message boards, now they aren't really offering anything other film sites can't do just as good or better. The board was truly the heart of it. I haven't been back there since it happened personally.
shareAccording to Alexa, IMDb didn't lose much, if any, traffic after closing their boards. I find that difficult to believe, given how many people posted there, but whatever.
I rarely go there anymore. I wish MC had directors and full casts. Those are about the only reasons I go to IMDb, and sometimes I can find that info just as easily on other sites, so I do.
I don't believe it either, a fair amount of the visitors was just trolls, they wouldn't have any reason to stay without a place to troll, And most normal visitors would reason like you and me. Sounds like an attempt to save face.
shareThe thing is, Alexa is an independent site that monitors the traffic on all sites large enough to warrant ranking. MovieChat is on there too. So I don't know how IMDb could have fudged the stats to save face.
Still, on the face of it, there was so much traffic on those boards, it seems like their traffic would have taken a bigger dip than the stats showed.
There were a lot of trolls there, but also a lot of them were sock accounts.
There is probably ways for a huge site like that to change the numbers a bit. What TexasJack said about getting hits from google made sense though. It might be as simple as that.
shareNo doubt it is about getting the massive Google hits. It's possible they did something to boost their search engine optimisation at that time to make their stats higher to compensate for the loss of traffic from the boards.
shareI think they should at least try with the message board again, just as a test, maybe the trolls have tired off now a couple years later. Probably not but who knows.

Directors, full cast, music, locations, goofs, trivia etc which a lot of people are freaks about (me included) are still a reason to visit but their discussion boards were the heartbeat

If we ever fuss in the future (which happens a lot hereπ¬) let's at least remember this...it's the internet, we are just jawing and at the end of the day 99% of our crew is fun, solid and reasonableπ

I don't know how expensive or difficult it would be to have that info here. Wouldn't have to be everything, just directors and full cast would work for me. I do like reading about locations, trivia, and all that, but mostly I care about those two things.
