Movies Based on True Stories

Does anyone know of a site that lists movies based on true stories and also tells the true story? I used to know of one, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Check this out:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls021398170/

or just google "true story movies" for a list.

reply

I have tried the google search. All I get is a list, but not the actual true story.

reply

You have to see the movies to see the actual story.

reply

LOL!
You are funny

reply

Maybe it needs to be explained.

I have seen the movies. Many are not the actual story, just "based on" the story. For example, "A Killer Among Friends" is based on a true story, but names and many circumstances have been changed.

I was looking for a site that actually tells the real story. Not with fake names and extra stuff added "for dramatization".

reply

How about ....
Use the techniques above to find a story you are interested in ,
then go read the wikipedia page for said story.

In fact , why not subtract movies from the equation altogether if you dont like their "based on" angle and dramatisations.

Just go read any non-fiction book....

Dirty Harry (the first one)

Lawrence of Arabia

Sound of Music

Zodiac

Munich

One Day in September (a regular documentary)

Chainsaw Massacre

Catch Me if You Can

Schindler's List

Defiance

Black Mass

The King's Speech and The Pianist are good too.

reply

I never saw "The King's Speech", but I did see "The Pianist", which I enjoyed a great deal, and thought it was very good.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is fictional, although it is loosely based on the serial killer Ed Gein.

reply

I admittedly never saw the movie "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", but I do understand that it was loosely based on the serial killer, Ed Gein.

Heavenly Creatures is a great film based on a true story.

Wikipedia is your friend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_actual_events

It breaks it down by decade with a brief sentence of what the movie is based on.

"Does anyone know of a site that lists movies based on true stories and also tells the true story?"

Why are you only interested in true stories that have had movies made about them if you dont want to watch the movie?

reply

I saw the movie (for example, "A Killer Among Friends" and just curious about the true story it was based on.

reply

ah , I see.
So you are looking for a website that contains "the real full story" of any movie you might see that is based on a true story?

Why restrict your search for "the full story" to one website? why not, when such a movie comes up, just use google to find the real true story?

There has *never* been a better use of LMGTFY :)

Maybe because sometimes it only says "Based on a true story" but the names and a lot of circumstances were changed. So, not knowing anything about the real names, etc., it makes it a little harder to google the information. With the example I used, I learned the real names from the IMDB discussion board because someone else had posted the real information. I also had learned of that website because someone had posted a link to it after someone asked a similar question.

As I said before, there used to be a website called "Movies Based on True Stories" but it no longer exists. All you did was search for the movie, click on it, and the real story came up.

reply

hmm , so we need a website that has a list of all the movies , and some information about them.
That would take some kind of database to achieve...
If i was to create one, i'd call it "The Internet Movie Database" ... oh wait ....

You didnt need to look in the imdb discussion board , all the names of the real folk and many other details, are posted repeatedly in the trivia section , as they would be for any other movie.

IMDB is the definitive source for movie information, because ,like wikipedia, its been put together by a huge number of people. I'd be very surprised imdb didnt have at least enough to get you started on any true story movie.

The website you remember could not possibly be anywhere near as comprehensive.
It was probably a lot closer to those bullshit clickbait Top-Ten-blankiest-blank stoopid compilation things.

I bet , without looking, that IMDB will even have the information that "Fargo" is in fact not a true story , despite it saying that it is at the start.
