Movies that were way better than expected...

I watched Fighting (09) some years ago, expecting very little but...guys fighting I suppose

It turned out to be a beautiful little movie about a gaggle of misfits starting a family/crew of sorts and moving on from the 'hood and maybe building a decent life together
It was pretty uplifting quite frankly!
The fights were cool too
The cast (Tatum, Howard, Guzman...) was amazing
The Bodega fight scene was filmed very close to my job under the 4-5-6 Train in the city...the 'hood was all talking about it for days

Name a movie you watched with no expectations that blew you away

I never expected to like Tombstone as much as I did. It turned out to be one of my all-time favorites.

reply

It was a really good movie
I seem to recall that you took your handle from this one...

reply

Yes, indeed!

Now that I think about it, I was actually a bit skeptical going in because Kevin Costner’s “Wyatt Earp” had only been released a year before and I was thinking “Do we really need another one this soon?”

The Costner movie was enjoyable, but Tombstone beats it every which way.

reply

Never saw that Costner one, the 3 hour run time always seemed absurd to me

Tombstone was great

reply

It’s worth watching. Very different tone as compared to Tombstone, but a very good movie in its own right.

reply

open range, with costner & duvall, is the one for costner to hang his hat on.

they drew out the ending too long, but that aside, it was one hell of a good western.

reply

Agreed. I loved Open Range.

Salt of the Earth (1954) - suppose to be pro Communist but I saw it as more pro worker and women's rights.

reply

Never saw it but i support the message

Movie 43 -- Twisted and gross and hilarious, perfect.

The Lone Ranger -- Quirky dark comedy with amazing action scenes. Critics kept bashing it for not being what they expected.

Logan -- I didn't even want to see it. Watched reluctantly. WOW!

Raising Arizona -- I ignored this movie for most of my life. When I finally saw it for the first time maybe 6 years ago, I damn near wept with happiness. SO good. Coens hit it big in the beginning with Blood Simple and Raising Arizona.

balls under the chin was hillarious 🙂🙂🙂

Yes that was one of the best bits, and it's the perfect opener to set the stage for the entire movie. You get the celebs doing absurd, dirty (including sexually explicit) humor that is often funny specifically because it goes gleefully over the top without looking back.

A lot of the movie is pretty tame compared to that opener.

Fans of Loose Shoes, Kentucky Fried Movie, Amazon Women on the Moon... And I think I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (is that right?).... they will all love this movie.

Most of the critical bashing comes from people who probably went just to see the A-list stars and were shocked by the juvenile humor they weren't looking for, which would be really funny if it was intended to be exactly that way. If it was literally marketed to bring in a casual wide range of people and then guarantee to gross out or offend a good portion of them, just by sheer statistics. The low scores would then be its vindication.

its pretty amazing how good the coens were right out the gate. miller's crossing - an amazing neo-30s gangster homage.

reply

The two must be just similar enough to amplify their good ideas, while being just different enough to spot each other's bad ideas. Sibling rivalry would actually be productive here, always trying to find fault with the other one.

Good list
Raising Arizona was fantastic, a great cast, soundtrack and story
10/10 for me

Logan was brilliant
I love superhero movies and this one might be the best ever
Every great story must end in tragedy...Logan was perfect and very sad...so great!
I have yet to see your other two but you have mentioned Movie 43 before
I will continue to look for it

You honestly have to be pretty fucked up in the head to love Movie 43, and that's why I love it. Highly recommended as long as you're not easily offended or grossed out (and it's really nothing outlandish). I was just telling hownos it would be hilarious "If it was literally marketed to bring in a casual wide range of people and then guarantee to gross out or offend a good portion of them, just by sheer statistics."

I'll list one more: Cool Hand Luke. The movie felt oddly modern in a lot of ways. The picture is just phenomenal, too, as it was basically shot on the same format as IMAX film, which basically makes it look like a modern production on blu-ray. Something that was just shot months ago.

Hmmm.. many movies fall into this category for me. However, they were usually not great movies, only better than I expected.

Angry Bird The Movie. Surprisingly not that bad. Very funny and has a quite new original story.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes. What did you expect from a CGI-laden reboot of a classic, starring James Franco? Turned out very good.

reply

I liked the Apes movies, I need to see that Franco one

Blade Runner 2049

reply

I have been avoiding this one
The original is such an all-timer I expected this to be a big letdown but on your suggestion I will look for it👍

reply

Cool.
