Does anyone who was around at the time remember 1986?
What was it like and do you remember anything from that year?
shareWhat was it like and do you remember anything from that year?
sharethe space shuttle blew up in january
I remember my brother gradusting from high school. And I remember watching Charlotte's Web for the first time that year lol.
shareI was 15. First serious girlfriend...sex on the regπ van Halen sucked officially by then. You could see a second run flick for under a buck...gas also under a buck a gallon...smokes about a buck. The drinkin age was 19 in my state.
shareI remember...
The IRA were blowing things up and killing people. We are Irish-American but I recall my dad calling them murderers and saying 'that's not how things should be done kid.' I get their goals but I tend to agree with Pop-Dukes, when you find yourself installing a car bomb you should probably hit pause and think things through
We watched the Space Shuttle launch in art class and I remember the disaster not really affecting us kids because we were young and dumb...The Art class teacher cried.
I had never seen a grown man cry before, except for a junky relative and he was no man, I assure you
On a side note, I failed to make it into the Art Club (which I really wanted to be a part of) and that really lit a fire under my ass
30+ years later I have never heard 'good but not good enough' again
I had better goddam not or shit is getting broken and the big mouth is getting harmed
Uncle Ronnie! That's what we called Reagan in my dad's house
We loved him, had his picture on the wall
I get that he went gang-busters on the budget but c'mon, he went all in on the Military spending and looked the Russians in the eye and THEY blinked!
What a fine fellow he was
Fun times at the movies...Big Trouble in Little China, Aliens, Back to School...great stuff!
Rebecca...an Italian girl, raven haired and beautiful
She was the first (of many!) to reject my advance...I wont ever forget her
She wound up dating some filthy looking dirtbag who was older and had a car (a total piece of shit car but I get it)
Broke my 13 year old heart!
This whole episode taught me a good lesson about economics and materials
Got my first job to get a car
$4.25 an hour and I worked after school every day
I had a car 2 years later, before I could even 'legally' drive it
Lots of other stuff...camping, fights, first beers, Heavy Metal music...
1986 was a pretty good year
My mother was Irish Catholic and she hated the IRA. She used to say there is nothing in Belfast worth killing or dying for. From what I see of Belfast I think she was right.
shareOn the border of Yonkers and The Bronx back in the 90s this discussion often led to fights...us American boys never got the IRA thing but the Irish lads from over there had a real chip on their shoulders about it
Got so bad they wouldn't come to our bars and we couldn't go to theirs
Real Irish seem to hate us American ones...this makes St Patrick's Day an awkward affair
Honestly, I just gave up on it all, no more Patty Day for me
I just say I'm an American these days...it suits
terrible joke about the challenger disaster :
what color were christa mcAulliffe's eyes?
blue - one blew this way, the other blew that way.
i told youse it was terrible.
sledge-hammer was the big vid then, also the dire straits one about custom kitchen deliverarivarivaree.....
I remember that Dire Straits video too!
They said 'faggots' in that song...Jeez, that was very uncool but I guess we have come a long way since which is good
Also, I seem to remember a little fat boy in my class with Nike sneakers (he was a spoiled little piggy and very hard to deal with)
I'm pretty sure none of us were aware of Nike before that and boy, they sure became a thing!
I just remember being a 5/6 year old. I can't really sum up the year.
shareGraduated University of Toronto in 1986 and got my first job with General Mills in the payroll department. A good company to work for back then. The company has downsized considerably since the 1980s. Also had a girlfriend who graduated at the same time and I thought we were on the marriage track even though we were only 23. Anyway she accepts a job in Ottawa for no good reason and we do the long distance thing for a few months. She broke my heart that girl although I still think of her fondly.
I remember Reagan's speech after the Challenger disaster

The first thing that comes to mind is the space shuttle disaster. My dad called to tell me it blew up. I thought he was exaggerating. He told me to turn the TV on. I saw right away that he wasn't.
The Chernobyl disaster.
