Why is it so expensive to visit Antarctica?

Seriously, I'm looking online and prices run between $10,000 to $25,000 which is quite outrageous. If you want to reach the south pole, at least $70,000!!! WTF... But I do badly want to visit there someday.

Check it out, there are two documentaries about Antarctica I can think of that will explain that. Both are great.

Antarctica: A Year On The Ice
Encounters At The End Of The World

and there are probably others that explain what life is like and how hard it is to supply and maintain the bases in Antarctica.

Why would you wanna go there?lol.

Why would anyone want to go to Mars, or the moon?

reply

Good point,i just like staying warm too much lol.

For bragging rights. And to say you visited all 7 continents in the world.

It's still there? Al Gore said it would be gone by now.

reply

No, he never said that. But, in fact some of the large ice shelves have split off and melted.

I admit, I understand your interest after seeing some documentaries on Antarctica, but honestly I think I am better off just watching the docs than going there in real life. I would not mind being in the winter skeleton crew to see what it is like but I think it is pretty hard to get to work there. I am not big on heat, but I just hate the bitter cold.

One problem is that nothing will deteriorate or decay there, so you have to remove all the garbage, and pollution is a big problem.

I just think it would be a cool place to work and be part of a very unique team.
