Favorite childhood cartoons....

What cartoons did you love when you were a kid??

reply

Beany and Cecil, Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear and all his buddies, The Jetsons, Tennessee Tuxedo, Casper, Underdog, Magilla Gorilla, The Pink Panther, Road Runner, The Flintstones, and of course, Bugs Bunny and Friends.

Way too many to even decide where to start, and I still watch classic cartoons regularly and now dissect them as an adult/animator, but I just want to say I was literally JUST watching Tennessee Tuxedo a moment ago, looking for the episode where Jerboa Jump is a quack optometrist and gives Tennessee eyeglasses made of bottlecaps... Anyone remember? Words fail to describe how great that show is. Why is it so goddamn hilarious to me? It's way funnier than it's supposed to be. The drawings are absolutely ridiculous. The voices... Tennessee is such an asshole and so predictable... I lose my mind every time. Luv it to infinity.

Yo zephyr_cape, you a fan of space ghost coast to coast?

reply

Heck yes! Oh man what a good show, I miss it.

The thing about childhood cartoons for me is that the era that I grew up in may have been the best moment for cartoons ever, the late 80s - early 90s. You still had Saturday morning cartoons so you saw all the classic Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbara stuff, plus a lot of fun new ones after school, like Rescue Rangers, Inspector Gadget, Animaniacs etc. At the same time Nickelodeon was just starting and it was just a deluge of creativity and free-wheeling experimentalism and gave us a few of the all time greatest cartoons, like Ren & Stimpy, which might be my pick for all around most genius cartoon series ever. And they also occasionally played older classics that major networks thought wouldn't be popular enough for Sat am anymore like Rocky and Bullwinkle, Beanie and Cecil, Roger Ramjet, etc. Then Cartoon Network started shortly after that, and among other significant developments you started to see animation from Japan, Canada and elsewhere on TV, and yeah adult animated comedies like Space Ghost CtoC, Dr. Katz, South Park started to appear more often. And the Simpsons was in its heyday. So you got an extremely vast view of what animation could be at that moment. Lucky and insane times.

I really liked the original Transformers, especially the 1986 movie and the seasons that followed it.

The movie was amazing... correction: IS amazing.

I remember when the 2007 live action abomination was first announced, I naively thought it might have a similar tone and plot to it. Oh how wrong I was.
