Your first DVD

Do you remember the first DVD you bought? VHS?

I remember the first DVDs that my parents bought for our family collection were Monty Python and the Holy Trail and The Sixth Sense. I had purchased our family DVD player because they never would have. I was like 14 maybe.

The first one I personally bought was X-Men.

I'm so old I remember the first VHS brought into our house as a kid was The Deer Hunter

We had some VHSs, a lot, but most were recorded off TV. We had a big collection of those. The retail VHSs that I remember we had early on were Ghost and the Jack Ryan box set. I got the Star Wars Special Edition box set for Christmas 97, maybe 98.

Oh and Terminator and T2 we had for sure.

first VHS I ever bought was Austin Powers 2

Beverly Hills Ninja and Joy Ride.......

Remember Buying My first DVD player at walmart.....It was A DVD entertainment center that came with DVD 2 Large Speakers and SUB....I was in The 7th grade at the time and Had been wanting to start not only buying DVDs but I knew I wanted A HUGE DVD collection....

I bought This Dvd Player/center(to this day I wish I still had it) it was ahead of its time....

I remember I had NO DVDs when I bought it and went over to the DVD rack and bought Beverly Hills Ninja at the same time....

When home hooked it up and watched it....

Next day, Went And Rented "The One"(A Jet Li action movie) and watched It that night....

I also Consider Joy Ride My first bought DVD too.....because It was the very first NEW RELEASE DVD that I bought....

Starting With Joy Ride all the way until now, I go out and buy New Releases the day they come out....

I'm pretty sure Joy Ride and Zoolander were my first 2 New Releases bought

Worth Noting, First Blu Ray was Iron Man 2, I had been wanting to make the change from DVD player to Blu Ray for a while...Finally did it the day IM2 was released, Bought Both My 1st BR player and IM2 ....

I'm currently in the process of converting all My favorite DVDs over to Blu Rays....

I've got near 500 BR's and 1300 DVDs....I go to Pawn shops and and find My favorite Movies on BR that I own on Dvd, buy The Blu Rays cheap and replace my Dvds with BRs

I must admit though, Im starting to get into Digital Copies....I still enjoy having My collection, But I wont buy A Blu ray anymore unless it comes with a Digital Copy....I guess the ultimate Goal is to have my entire collection converted to BR and Have them all In My Digital Library too

I had a DVD collection that is almost totally sold off at this point. My collection was about 7 or 800 I think at it's largest. I've gotten some of my favorites on Blu Ray, and have a decent Criterion Collection going of about 30.

I really care about the commentaries. I like to get hard copies for that specifically. Also, I hate Blu Ray packaging and most of the art. Films that had excellent cover art on DVD and an amazing edition will be released with a complete redesign with art that looks like shit, in the blue case, and often times they'll omit the special features. I have several movies that are sort of a hybrid, where I've kept the awesome packaging, and inside is the Blu Ray. All blue cases have been replaced with clear. The blue cases look like shit, and the art sucks, mostly.

Oh yeah, my digital collection is massive.

Nope. Can't remember that far back. Sorry.

Man, what a great question! I wish I could remember the very first one I bought. I can't remember the first DVDs but I can remember a certain three I bought once. My grandmother took me to this pawn shop in town one morning, I was 15 (seventeen years ago) and I wasn't interested in anything I saw, until I saw some DVDs. I had a ps2 at the time and I had started to really like watching movies instead of TV. Anyway, in those few DVDs I found Requiem for a Dream, Predator & Half - Baked. I watched Requiem first and its still one of my favorites movies today.

I had countless VHS when I was younger, all the Disney classics, TMNT, Peter Pan, Biker Mice From Mars, etc. My brother and I used to binge all of our tapes in the summer when we didn't have school. We'd be so excited to stay up late and watch everything.

Weird, I just bought a Requiem for a Dream blu ray earlier today. I had owned it on DVD before, but I sold it off long ago.

reply

That's awesome. I plan to do the same one of these days :)

I remember the DVD was released with a slightly cut down R rated version and also the Unrated theatrical version. A buddy of my was rather miffed when he bought the R DVD, not knowing there were two different releases, and he missed out on a couple of frames in the "add to ass" scene. The one I got today is labeled "The Directors Cut" and it says unrated, but I'm not as hung up on that scene as my straight friend.

reply

The way that guy says "ass to ass" is beyond creepy. I know people might joke about that scene but whoa, its powerful. It says so much about her character, what she is going through and dealing with. I would be bummed too if I missed out on some frames though, I hate missing anything in a movie!

reply

It was just funny how he made such a big deal of it. That scene was so important to him. It is very powerful, as is the entire film. It's an opera of self destruction.

reply

I wonder why, lol. Connelly looked smokin' back in the day but in that scene, I can't find her sexy. I feel bad for her, not turned on. opera of self destruction, perfect. :)

reply

First DVD I bought was The Tango Lesson. First VHS? Not a clue.

reply

I believe it was Planes Trains and Automobiles on DVD.

VHS? That’s harder. We bought blanks and taped tv or rented. I think my dad bought some Beatles vhs tape but it was like the type you’d find in a $2 bin at a discount store. More or less raw news footage mascarading as a documentary.

reply

Darnit, I don't even remember! It was probably some 90s movie. Or maybe it was The Little Mermaid.🤔
