Can you read a book for 8 straight hours ??

I could do three hours tops. My wife was reading a novel from 10am to 6pm. We really haven't done a bloody thing all day.

Not anymore, but I have. Started Watership Down one night, thinking I wasn't going to like it, but got so pulled in, I read it through to the end. It's long, about 500 pages.

Must be a very good book. What was it?

reply

Undercover reading?

reply

😄

I'd have needed a bunch of flashlight batteries for that one.

reply

It would be worth it 👍

reply

Would have been!

reply

8 would be stretch without taking some sort of short break so probably not. I think the longest was probably the Harry Potter books where I literally could not put them down. I certainly could read 8 hours in a day if I really enjoyed the book and had the time.

The only book I recall reading through in one sitting was a translation of Cyrano de Bergerac. I was in college, Summer School, beautiful day. The story was written in Verse, so it was pretty easy to read, and I think I just moved around to various locations and finished it in one day. However, it may not have required 8 hours to complete, and I can't even say how true it was to the original.
Many years later I read an abridged version of Les Miserables. When I saw "abridged" I thought it meant it was for maybe a younger reader, and avoided it for years. When I finally read it, I realized I may not be able to get through a more faithful rendering of the tale.

If I had to or loved it.

What novel was she reading? I want to read it!

reply

I want to know the same thing! Which book?

reply

Tell us, tell us!!

I read The Picture of Dorian Grey in one sitting on a beach.

reply

It was a mystery by Lynda La Plante

reply

It's almost 500 pages too. No wonder. Did she finish it?

reply

She finished it last night. She likes this author and has read most of her novels.

reply

This must have been an especially good one for her to have read 8 hours straight. Sounds like fun. I miss getting that engrossed in a book.

reply

Thanks, I'll check it out!

reply

Once upon a time I could. But since the internet and smart phones? Not so much. Too many convenient distractions. But back in the day I could sit down and read a book from noon to night no problem.

reply

Same here. I love reading but it's so easy to fall into the habit of checking my phone and then getting sucked into something on it. I read so much less than I used to.

reply

Used to always keep a paperback book in my pocket too. But how I just surf the web on my phone when I gotta wait places.

reply

Same here. I just visited London. Shocking number of people on the underground were reading actual books and newspapers.

reply

I couldn't keep reading for that amount of time. I haven't really timed myself. I think about an hour at a time is much as I can manage. I get fidgety after that. No matter how much the book interests me.

reply

I've done that a couple of times. Not in a while though. I think I was reading Perfect Storm the last time.

reply

Maybe she will come to you when she needs a sex break. Kinda recharges the batteries.
What book was she reading?
