Getting Lost in a Corn Maze

Has this happened to anyone? Did you feel the need to call 911? I hear this every year around this time lol.

reply

Yes. I called 911 for an emergency delivery of butter and salt.

reply

LOL. Corny but funny.

LOL!

Yes, I literally got lost plowing my way through a cornfield ( not maze ) with my '55 Chevy once after sharing some good reefer with a carload of stoner buddies. There was no 911 back then, and we wouldn't have resorted to it even if it had been available. That heavy, sturdy, old vehicle handled that mini-ordeal like a tank and just kept on keeping on. It was an uproarious blast for all of us !

Weird that I am watching The Shining right now, and just got to the hedge maze ending.

reply

Awesome. If I HAD to choose a favorite horror movie, it would be The Shinning. I also read the book this summer which was excellent, even though I'm not fan of Stephen King.

reply

I haven't read the book, though I love Stephen King, and have read a number of his books. I did see "Stephen King's The Shining" from 1997, and I hate it. Not liking Kubrick's movie, or at least understanding why he made the changes he did, I just don't understand. Making is own version is probably the biggest mistake he ever made. Even directing something different himself would have been a better use of his time. I would much prefer to have Maximum Overdrive 2.

reply

I'm not sure how to explain this, but it took me many years to wrap my head around Kubrick's The Shinning. I've probably seen it over a dozen times and always find something new every time I watch it. Check out the Documentary "Room 237." https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2085910/

reply

I've seen Room 237. The primary draw and perhaps source of some people's revulsion for The Shining is its ambiguity. The same could be said for basically any of Kubrick's films from 2001 on. When I first saw 2001, I hated it. Now it's one of my favorites. The first time I saw The Shining, I was accustomed to Kubrick and was less put off than I probably would have been if I were alive in 1980. I found it very scary, very weird, and very fun. There's always new bits to unearth in a rewatch of any of his films, and I gladly do so regularly. They beg to be examined and reevaluated. They're beautiful, they're interesting, they're offensive, they're seductive. I love Stanley Kubrick's films. A Clockwork Orange is terrifying, but also one of the funniest movies of all time. Barry Lyndon, masquerading as a baroque painting, is also quite funny and shocking in its coldness, despite the warmth of its imagery. I can't stop watching them, I can't.

If you're lost in the corn, there are ways of at least identifying direction: Look for the mossiest side of the corn stalks, this is almost always the North side. If there is no moss, or the distribution is fairly uniform, you may have to use striation counting.

Cornstalks being stronger in tension than compression, you will find horizontal/circumferential striations (wrinkles, bend lines, think bendy-straw segments) on the leeward or sheltered side of the cornstalk. This will be a reciprocal of the prevailing winds, generally West by Northwest (285 degrees) above the 38th parallel & West by Southwest (265 degrees) under. If you're directly ON the 38th parallel, you may be in deep Kimchi. If you have no clue what parallel you're on, you are probably up sh!t creek without toilet paper.

If moss indexing and striation counting both fail to establish direction, you can tell direction by the position of the sun, if you know what time it is. They say you can tell time by the sun, but I can never see the hands... maybe it's digital.

Anyone who gets the bright idea of magnetizing a needle or pin to make a home-made compass needs to remember that true North and Magnetic North DO NOT coincide directly unless you're on the Agonic Line. In CONUS, this runs in a line from about Panama City Florida up through Madison Wisconsin till it reaches the geomagnetic North pole, a tad Southeast of the axial or 'true' North pole.

What's worst is some smart-assed farmers who plant in concentric rings. (crop circles?) and you end up circling. It's a rather spine-tingling moment when you encounter fresh size 13 tracks. 'These are fresh, maybe an hour old...Hey these are MINE!

Maybe I should leave a little disclaimer here about the veracity of technical info to be found online sometimes? This post is constructed from some very solid technical info and an equal portion of biodegradable, organic bovine fertilizer.

What about potatoes ?? You have any info on them.

reply

They'll usually do better if you plant them North of a big shade tree.

Also, you CAN make batteries with them, but I doubt you'll do a sub ten-second quarter-mile in your Prius using them or run your laptop for more that about 22.71558 nanoseconds.

Here's a Prius that runs in the NINES. Not entirely stock...

Never heard of anyone getting lost. Back in my high school days, this friend of mine BEGGED me to go to one with her and some dudes. I went, got scared to death by Michael Myers, before I even entered said maze. Then he chased me to the car and once I locked the doors, I sat there for a few hours until she came back. Apparently, she grabbed the guys dick all night.

reply

It happened to a mom and toddler a few years ago. They spent the night in the maze.
