I've learnt more since I left school, then I ever learnt at school...

...I sure wonder what my teachers think of that.

reply

Books teach, life teaches.

reply

Sorry you wasted your high school years. You'll never get that time back.

reply

ain't that a bitch!? I wish I would have let loose a lot more and just had fun.

reply

I'm the opposite. I didn't care and did the least I could just to show up and not flunk out.
I was a lot smarter than that, but I didn't have the long view. Nothing seemed relevant versus smoking pot and staying out all night and experiencing Life as it rolled past. I wasn't at the oars, I was more adrift. But I'm still around many years later, so I guess I'm not that much of a loser.

reply

I didn't have the long view either. I was the chick staying out too many nights in a row, drinking and never showing up to the place. I won't say I have regrets but I wish I would have experienced some genuine good times with good friends. Biggest chip on my shoulder, snepts.

At some point I came to the realization most of the people I wanted to fit in with were jerks, and a lot of the straight kids were likely much nicer. Oh well, like Cher sang, "If I could Turn Back Time," hahaha.

reply

True, but I think that about a lot of society haha.
You know, I sang that song so loud when it first hit the radio. My grandmom would say, I need some gas, can you pump it for me and off we'd go. It would always come on the radio it seemed and we would JAM!

reply

That's a great memory. I'm not much of a Cher fan (prefer her movies to her music and persona), but that other big hit she had, "Believe" or maybe "Do You Believe," whatever, I find irresistible, even with the weird vocal flangeing. It's like my first reaction was omg, not another Cher anthem, then after I was exposed to it a couple times, it just infected my brain. I love when I randomly hear it, and wish they'd start it again from the top.

reply

We had some good times in the car, she also loved the party boy theme from the tv show Jackass. It was 8 full minutes of that shit and she would say, Play that funky song I like! Oh that was another good one!

I can feel something inside me say, I really don't think I'm strong enoughhh, Do you believe in life after lovee? Oh yeah, snepts we could have some fun jam sessions. :)

I've always been a fan of Top 40/pop music. Still can not resist a little Tearin' up my heart by Nsync.

reply

You couldn't pay me to read a book in school. Now I can't put them down.

reply

I know the feeling. I was unwilling to read 1984 by George Orwell for English. Now, I want to read it.

reply

I loved English and literature. History too, once I finally got a few good teachers. Plus I always loved books, even if the reading was for school.

Otherwise, it was a snooze for me, and I could hardly wait to graduate. Felt like being released from prison.

reply

Same.
I hated school so much. I hate thinking about those years, oh man.

reply

I didn't necessarily hate it. I miss being around my friends that I had had since kindergarten.

reply

I did in my early 20s but not anymore. I hardly think about anyone from high school, I'll randomly see someone and honestly, its like they are too busy to even make small talk.

reply

How often do you do fractions every day ?

reply

Right? Or anything you learned in math really. I mean I had to learn about the stock market at 14 yrs old?? Taught history, political science and economics by football coaches. Yeah, school really is a joke.

reply

Some of it. I work at a school.

reply

Lol not offended I hope. My mom was a teacher and she was the best, like really cared if the kids walked away with something. I had a few of those teachers too, but not enough to make a difference. Everything I know is from books and life experience.

reply

That’s very true. That’s why I loved college so much. You only have to learn what you’re interested in

reply

Maybe more often than you realize. But more important is that math forces you to use your mind in an abstract way. You think on a different level, and hopefully it helps you understand Life more than just walking around looking at stuff.
I mean, I do calculate my earnings by eliminating 20% for taxes, so I can figure how much I'm going to make in a month, pay my bills, how much $$ I have to spend and how much I can set aside. It just doesn't hurt to know how to think on as high a level as you can.
And this is coming from one big high school dummy.

reply

That’s true. The one math class that actually helped me was in grade 11. Learning about interest and taxes and stuff

reply

I had to take a statistics class in college, and the teacher wasn't hard on us, and the methodology totally made sense.
Made me wonder if I had applied myself toward math in High school (sic) maybe I would have gotten a little further in life.

reply

I never had a class that taught me about interest, taxes, and practical things like that. Wish I had.

reply

Not often. Life does not require it nearly as much as the teachers try to have you believe, unless you're trying to become a maths teacher, which I am not.

reply

I was in my mid thirties before I was finished with school. It has paid off in the long run.
