Let the wake begin!
"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory that no one can steal" - is an old Irish saying, with Dewey loving the Red Sox as he did I thought it fit to start my little eulogy with a touch of the Bostonian spirit which helps forge the foundations of souls who could take the bad with the good and never let it split their mettle. He'd have been proud of the Sawx games against the Mets and the Yankees this week regardless of the outcome and I'm sure he'd be happy for each of us caring about him enough and standing together in a union of happiness from mourning regardless of how we each proceed in the future.
Speaking of the future, the seconds hand on a clock ticks for us all, some take it as a chide hammering at their metal and reminding them of the inevitable. Others take it differently and one of the fascinating and unique things about Dewey is that he took that eternal tick-tock and turned it into a metronome. He could play to it, sing to it, dance with it and get the timing of a joke or comeback just perfect with it - it was a delight to watch and an absolute pleasure to take part in with him, as many of us here have done. I hope that he has infected us all with that same interpretation of that perdurable pendulum and that we can find it in our hearts, nay - we have an obligation to Dewey, to enjoy ourselves, and each other, as best we can regardless of the situations we find ourselves in.
Speaking of the name Dewey, I have the honour of being among the first to refer to him here as such here. Like a lot of people, trying to get my head around the moniker "godewey" was incredibly frustrating for me. Was it God-Yahweh)? Godew-eh? Go Dew Yay? Until it came to me in a flash of realisation, in an old sports bar I use to frequent there was a pennant on one of the walls which had "Go Dewey!" written on it. I don't know who that particular Dewey was but the younger brother from Malcolm in the Middle was called Dewey and so I knew it to be a fairly accepted name. Perhaps for some it was obvious from the beginning, but having read from afar the memories of some within our community I know that I'm not alone with knowing what "godewey" meant. I know that he'd have a retort the likes of which would have us all splitting our sides at and am saddened that we'll never get to know it when I soberly and sadly put forward the slight goad of suggesting he change his username here now to "gonedewey".
And from that bittersweet attempt at humour let us celebrate that ridiculously sharp wit of his. He and Dazed tore apart the name of the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" in a hilarious back-and-forth of changing one letter of the title which ended with "T.Rex Maced Rover Mambas" (Liberties were taken). That was one of many fantastic examples of his quick wit, broad range and unmistakable signature genius. Something which most of us here today saw in action and will remember fondly I hope.
So raise a glass and raise it well. To Dewey, may there be many tunes to tap your toe to and songs to be sung where you are just now. Please, keep a seat at the good table for each of us 🍸
Now you happy few have a great evening and enjoy all of the games and celebrating of Dewey's life for as long as you can. I don't want anyone leaving until Monday if they can help it.
Take care and enjoy yourselves (It's later than you think!)
