Work environment.

One of these days, I hope to create a work environment where no one nitpicks you or attempts to be cute with stupid jokes. I've worked my ass off for seven hours and then I hear from a co-worker, She ain't done nothing all day, tell her to work faster.

I don't care if you are joking, this is pointless banter. All it does is piss me off and make me want to slash your precious truck tires.

It’s management’s responsibly to create and maintain a supportive and positive work environment; but, too often, the management creates just the opposite: criticizing instead of coaching, not taking every possible opportunity to praise staff members, showing no interest at all in being a friend and mentor to the staff and helping them to be promoted. Maybe you need to take a hard look at your superiors. If they’re creating a hostile environment, the situation is hopeless and you need to work for a business that deserves you. You’re a really good and kind person, and I know your customers love you, which means you give first-class customer service. Businesses are STARVED for people who are like you are.

reply

Oh its the superiors. I've been there for 2 years this November and its always like this. I thought maybe this was the way jobs are, the way everyone acts. (this is my first job) I love my customers and they often tell me how sweet I am and how they hope I never leave. I'd love to go into business with charliekelly! Talk about a wonderful environment. :D

reply

Sorry to hear it
People at work can be total blockheads
You know how hard you work, forget those jerks
I hope you have a lovely evening with your guy
All the best, you are a gem

reply

aw! thanks sho. you are sweet. I'm just bitching honestly. Needed a place to vent! Even if I don't work as quickly as other co-workers, I know that I do work hard and better than anyone else. They are indeed jerks!

charliekelly and I have a great few days planned :D I'm so very excited to snuggle and enjoy some time together.

reply

If you’re working more slowly than your peers, it may well mean that you’re taking more time to do your job right. Customers can see that, and they love it. Jobs being done right bring customers back to your business, and they also send their friends. Jobs done wrong drive customers away. My grandfather was a mechanic, and he taught me, “An honest and good mechanic will never want for business, and people will wait in line for him PATIENTLY.”

reply

I do get lots of high praise from customers which lets me know that I'm doing a good job. Always a nice feeling!

I know you have your own life whenever you live but R, can you come manage my store for a little bit, training me in the process? Place needs someone like you.

reply

Thank you. If your place is as I think it is, they wouldn’t have me on a silver platter, ‘cause I’m not their kind of guy! I wouldn’t do what they wanted me to. I’d do what was right. Are you working for a corporation, in a retail outlet? If so, they have a Customer Satisfaction Survey that is VERY important to both store and corporate management. The store’s satisfaction rating has to be at or above a certain level for your store bosses to hit full bonus. If it’s below a certain level, they get their asses reamed by Corporate. Encourage your customers to take the survey and to mention you by name. Write your full name on their receipt. Some customers will ask how they can send a letter praising you to your store manager, or have a word with him/her on the spot. Accept their offer! Even the world’s worst manager knows that customers are three times more likely to butch than they are to praise, so the campaign I’m suggesting to you will get their attention in a very positive way. Have you thought about being promoted into management and change the system from within?

reply

Ah yes the survey that prints on every receipt. We've dipped down into the 70s again but for 8 solid months, we had 100%. It was pizza and cupcake day several times and we can wear jeans for the rest of the year. Not really a victory but nice to have some type of praise. I will do that with the customers though! Thank you so much for the suggestions. I usually tell them how to fill them out but never think to write my name on the receipt.

I have thought about it. Instead of being a LSA, I would love to move up to assistant manager or store managers, but only if I got paid decent, But the power to make changes, actual changes that would benefit myself and everyone else, including the most important people, the customers? You'd have to pinch me.

reply

Yes, look into how much more you’d be earning versus how much more responsiblity and aggrevation you’d be getting. But, as store manager, you would have more effect on how customers AND associates are treated. I doubt that Corporate HR condones harrassing associates, for example, but if the policy is not enforced, it’s useless. Same thing with rudeness to customers, etc. And you’d also be in the position to set the example for the whole store, because the energy of an organization flows from the top down. And why stop at the store level? Why not move up to District, or Corporate? Never, ever sell yourself short!

reply

Yeah, I failed to mention its always my superiors who say things like this AND the rudest one always has something to say, especially to customers. I would fire her on the spot if I could. The things that she has gotten away with, especially to a district manager one time...amazes me.

District or corporate would be wild and exciting because I know very little about it.

reply

What company are you with, if you don’t mind my asking? Also, if you haven’t already, get yourself on LinkedIn. It’s terrific for promoting yourself, building a network of professionals and gathering information. A tip: put a real effort into building your Profile. If you don’t seem to take yourself seriously, no one elsewhere; and think about what keywords you want to have describe you, and make sure to include them when you write your profile. Recruiters use search engines that search by keywords.

reply

I'll PM you the name.

Anything can backfire, but, in 16 years, the letters never have blown up on me. I DID have a time when a family who loved me for the way I cared for them through a protracted MAJOR purchase and installation in my department came in to buy a computer for one of their youngsters in the computer department. They made a point of finding me and hugging me first, and the Father said, “We buy EVERYTHING here, and the only reason is because of you.” The store GM noticed the interaction and asked me, “They come here a lot. What are they getting?” I said, “A MacBook Pro. And they told me that I am the reason why they always come here.” The jackass got angry. “That’s not right,” he barked. “They should come here because they like THE STORE.” I saw no point in telling this bozo what should have been obvious: to this family, I AM the store.

I want to create a work environment where you can challenge your boss to a wrestling match for a raise.

reply

Hell yes! I would dominate those women. I'd take down all three managers above me and get a dollar raise for each one. I need a ref. You in Fred?

reply

I'll put on my striped shirt and call it down the middle.

reply

Going to assume that means callin' it fair and equal so in response, THATTA BOY!

reply

Indeed that's what it means. However, I'm fully expecting you to trounce the competition.

reply

Thanks for believing in me Fred! I would devour them, wouldn't stand a chance.

reply

Ok Stone Cold

reply

You can create many opportunities by hitting your boss in the head with a bedpan.

reply

Greco/Roman, or freestyle?

reply

Either one. Defender's choice.

reply

So is tire slashing off the table now?

reply

Hell no! You are welcome to suggest any other ideas you have :)

reply

Well in that case...Kentucky jelly wrestling!

HA! A few of them would be ..appealing to see I'll say that but they are cunts. They would never stand for it.

reply

No fun goody goodies😠

reply

Sorry to hear that you're having this kind of nonsense to deal with at work. Who needs that? Especially after a long tiring shift.
I'd bet that it's a jealousy issue, especially as you are good at what you do and get lots of compliments.

You manager ought to be shutting it down, far too often (in my experience) they don't want to rock the boat and want to be everyone's best pal.

If you don't get management support then I certainly hope you give it back to that person! I've got a feeling that you probably do😂

reply

I think thats what it is, jealousy. It is my assistant manager and she's the rudest woman I know to customers and everyone in general. I didn't used to give it back but that tune changed when I realized I wouldn't get fired. Now I let whatever I'm feeling at the moment fly right out of my mouth. The best feeling is after I say whatever, she always shuts up and walks off. :)

I HATE THE BEST PAL THING. I would run things so differently if I were a boss.
