Musicals you have watched

I watched Sound of Music as a kid and I was dragged to the theater to watched Chicago about 15 years ago. That is it.

Rocky Horror was an especially fun movie experience. I saw it at a midnight showing in a university town where I lived. The theater was in an area of town that was basically a hub for the students.

At some point, an unexpected intermission occurred. It suddenly became kind of interactive as several live actors, attired exactly like some of the characters in the movie, began traipsing through the aisles, singing various numbers. It was a colorful, flamboyant blast !

I didn't like Chicago when I saw it in the theater. Something was missing. I have nothing against the cast, but it lacked the exuberance of a good musical, to my mind.
Maybe I do have something against the cast. Gere, Zellwigger, Zeta? These names don't shout We can sing, we can dance.

The musicals I have watched are as follows:

A) West Side Story: (I've lost count, already!)

B) Wizard of Oz

C) My Fair Lady: (The movie is okay, but I liked the stage version better.)

D) Hair

E) The Music Man

F) The Sound of Music

G) Godspell: (The stage version was better. I really didn't like the movie at all.)

H) 1776: This movie was boring as hell. My friend and I walked out in the middle of it.

I) Oklahoma (The original Broadway stage production was far better, however.)

J) Brigadoon (on stage--was fantastic)

K) Godspell: (on stage)

L) Showboat:--on both the stage, and the 1936 movie version, with the late Paul Robeson.

We had the Original Cast Soundtrack album in my house while I was growing up, so 1776 has a special place for me.
William Daniels, Blythe Danner, Ken Howard. There's a fun scene when John Cullum (Northern Exposure) goes over-the-top advocating FOR the slave trade. "Molasses to Rum to Slaves." He ends up standing atop a desk hollering, and the rest of the actors just stare at this man gone mad.

I know it's not as well thought of as Rodgers & Hart / Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Frank Loesser, but I'll have to stand up for it.

Are classic Disney's cartoons count? If so I watched a lot; Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, to the modern animation counterparts like Frozen, Tangled, Moana, etc.

reply

Why not? We'll call them "animated musicals."

you do like them

reply

Yes, I grew up with them thanks to my mom. She played the soundtracks endlessly.

reply

I forgot about Fiddler on the Roof. I actually had the soundtrack to that on an 8-track tape for years. And that led me to remembering Yentl in addition. I've seen some others in this thread I had forgotten about.

reply

Same here, seeing some I'd forgotten about.

🤮 means I hated it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I was forced to stay and watch it because I was with a group.

Of the ones you haven't seen, I'd recommend Holiday Inn. It's black & white, and parts of it may remind you of White Christmas - which came 12 years later - but Holiday Inn is the movie that introduced Irving Berlin's iconic song. Fred Astaire's firecracker dance number is memorable, too.

Mamma Mia (On Stage)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Funny Girl (on stage)

Showboat (on both stage and screen--liked both of them equally well.)
