It is one of my favorite movies, a nightmarish gothic opera that transcends the superhero genre which bog down the others in cliches and tropes. I am a fan of the writer who also wrote Heathers. Every line is quotable. Every character is layered. Compare especially the female characters where Christopher Nolan struggles even to parallax reality due to his possible incel status.

shareBecause I feel that Batman Returns has greatly overshadowed the original 1989 film and definitely the Joel Schumacher films. I also feel Batman Returns is much more timeless than the Nolan films or Snyder because Returns isn't trying so hard to be dark and violent nor is it it a more realistic take on Batman like the Nolan films were because Tim Burton captured the fantastical comic book feel and atmosphere that Batman is supposed to have. I won't even get into the Ben Affleck version of Batman.
The action and the special effects of the 1989 film are really outdated and it's definitely a product of the 1980's (and not in a good way) due to having Prince creating music for the film. And while Joel Schumacher did try to attempt to create a more modern comic-accurate Batman film with Batman Forever, the excessive kid-friendliness and the soundtrack for that film dates it badly as well and makes it a product of the 1990's. Not to mention the overall confusing tone of the film and how it doesn't if it wants to be either a dark Batman film or a modern dumb silly campy take on the Adam West Batman from the 1960's.
Well, I pretty much agree with all of your criticisms. Those are actually the exact reasons I prefer the Burton movies. I would have to rewatch them to see if the second one was really superior. Michelle Pfeiffer was great as Catwoman, though, so you might be right.
