Your Idea Of A Memorial Day Backyard Party

Memorial Day in the USA is the social, sporting, cookout start to summer. It’s the start of the interval when gentlemen may acceptably wear white clothing (which period ends with Labor Day). What’s your idea of a Bachanalian blow-out for such a special day? Mine is:

A monster grill with cherry wood charcoal

Shell-grilled oysters with tamari and wasabi

Grilled Aged Angus Prime Rib roasts, marinated in Framboise, with the Host and Hostess carving to order

Grilled Swordfish and basil butter

Bordelaise sauce

Grilled sweet potatoes with sweet butter, sour cream and chives

Grilled Perdue chicken legs and thighs, still connected to each other, marinated in Martel Cordon Blue cognac for two days

Grilled sweet corn on the cob

Liquified sweet butter, plus sea salt

Grilled beefsteak tomatoes

Kale, Arugula and Romaine lettuce salad with walnuts, garlic croutons and Balsamic vinaigrette

Ciabatta bread

Half-sour pickles

Pickled pigs feet

Grilled Hofmann’s white Coney Island hot dogs (beef, pork and veal)

Stone-ground brown mustard

Strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles

Full kegs of Kirin beer with multiple straws stuck in them; also, funnels

Pitchers of Perrier ice water (the ice made with Perrier water), laced with bitters and lemon slices

Freshly-squeezed chilled tomato juice; also, Bloody Marys with white asparagus instead of a celery stick

Orange soda, chocolate milk, Creamsicles, Dreamsicles

Music by Jimi Hendrix and his different bands (the Experience, Band of Gypsies),
.38 Special, Led Zepplin, The Rolling Stones, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Queen, Cream, Santana, Mott the Hoople, David Johansson, Aerosmith, Ten Years After, AC/DC, The Who, Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run album and Molly Hatchet, plus whatever any guest has on his/her Blu-tooth portable

Appropriate gifts to the local police force

And several discretely-provided and very private bedrooms

I usually have 3 grills going during these shindigs.

Smoke pork butt - some sliced and some pulled

Chicken drummies and thighs - dry rubbed and sauced

Steaks

Brats

A couple batches of Paella

Cilantro lime coleslaw

Loaded potato salad

Grilled sweet corn

skewers of mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers, scallops, and potatoes

Twice baked potatoes

Always a fully stocked bar with about 20 different beers

Cheese cake

Plenty of music and games.

Horse shoes, bags, badminton, ping pong, cards against humanity

No rooms but plenty of woods to frolic around in.

reply

With what is the ‘tater salad loaded?

Three grills is a great idea!

But the woods? If you go out in the woods today, you better not go alone. Today’s the day the Teddy bears have their picnic. And/or you’ll find a pine cone rammed up your ass. Bears, and pine cones and snakes! Oh, my!

reply

Potato salad with cheese, bacon, chives, garlic, sour cream.
Basically anything you can put on a baked potato you put it in the potato salad.

My woods wouldn't have any bears.
Maybe some deer, possum, rabbits, an angry woodchuck.
Not to mention ticks and mosquitoes.

I'll have to rethink that one.

reply

I would never leave

reply

No reason to leave.
You could sleep over and cuddle with the pups!

reply

How great would it be to have a Movie Chat barbecue?

Imagine!

reply

I can't imagine!

Oh wait maybe I can.

I would supply the booze
you the ...well almost anything with your abilities
hownos the maple syrup
croft the bunnies
Then....

We would have separate areas marked off for the posts.
Everybody would walk around to each post to see if they wanted to stay and comment.
A few fist fights maybe?

Sounds like a lot of fun!

reply

Ha ha! You did once promise me a trip to the US!
There's actually no way I'm sitting on a plane for that long, you'd all have to come to me.

Mina,Stratego,Harry and Croft could be here in a couple of hours anyway. So we could have some bunnies on the barbecue,Tomb Raider on the console, The Room on the DVD player and Mina dancing with scarves and cigars before you yankees arrived. We would be drinking cocktails and yawning politely at Crofts 73rd retelling of his battle with Alice when THE AMERICANS arrive with their pretzels,Oreos and Chinos and bizarre self confidence.

reply

I did promise you that didn't I.
I was hoping you'd forgotten!

I'll have to ask Mina how the tunnel is coming. It may be a short cut.
I think she was the last one to use it. She couldn't make it because all those cigars
finally caught up with her. Bless her heart.
Give me a chance to finally see the Room.
Will Harry be incognito? I can never tell!

Once the americans arrive then the real party will start.
It's no party without us. It's nothing at all without us.

What's this bizarre self confidence you speak of?

reply

I'm coming over to your place, right now! Damn that sounds good.

R_Kane's sounds good too but I'm more of a down-home kind of girl.

It's just about dinner time here. Don't have that kind of spread, by a long shot, but am fixing to do a steak and fresh sweet corn for dinner.

reply

Grilled cheese sandwich with optional salad cream for dippage.

A six pack of pilsner.

Unless someone wants to go out to dinner and then who knows?

It's just a Monday for me sadly.

reply

Salad Cream for dipping?
Has to be Branston pickle (small chunks)

reply

A way back when Dazed I visited a friend and all they had for eating was microwaved potatoes and salad cream. Hunger's hunger and so I rolled with the punches and got stuck in.

Not a recommended dish but every now and then I like to add a little salad cream to simple things to make me appreciate having more choices than that these days.

I don't even like salad cream.

If someone were visiting though then the pickles would be out for sure, as would a selection of cheeses.

reply

Bolding?

reply

DAAAAMN! What time do you start serving? I'm there, dude!

The word backyard always makes me laugh because in the UK it conjures images of a poky cement square at the back of a terraced house where the bins and pigeons are kept.

reply

There are certainly backyards here that fit that description, but not all. My house is on just less than two acres, and my backyard is a half acre of lawn surrounded by woods. Nothing better than sitting on the back deck on a cool summer evening. It's a good sized deck but when I rebuild (hopefully next year) I'll double the size.

reply

Full kegs of Kirin beer with multiple straws stuck in them; also, funnels

Forget everything else. That's all you need.

reply

I didn’t think many people liked Kirin. What a pleasant surprise. I like it because it is smooth, chocolatey and Japanese. I enjoy Japanese libations, including plum wine and sake.

reply

I need an address

reply

Second star to the right, then straight on till morning.

reply

yall are killing me.

reply

That grilled swordfish sounds amazing. I'd also add tuna steaks to the menu. Just sear it for a minute on each side and serve medium rare.

reply

What type of tuna? I assume bluefin, which has the best taste, but is hard to find in the US, as most of it is exported to Japan. Yellowfin tuna tastes almost as good, costs less, and is more readily available. I vote that we slum it with yellowfin, also known as Ahi, and make up for it with the Kirin. And fresh lemon juice. On the tuna, not as a libation.

reply

I live in a fishing port community and have never seen bluefin for sale at the fish monger, even though many people fish for it here. Yellowfin on the other hand is an excellent alternative and I'm a big fan.

I've never had Kirin, but if its anything like Sapporo, I'm sure I'd like it.
