Westworld Season 2 --
-- is terrible so far. Shame, because season 1 was great.
shareI wouldn't call it "terrible" but it's not quite as good, at least so far. My biggest complaint is that it's becoming a bit predictable.
shareYeah, that about says it. I think we were spoiled by Season 1.
shareOpinions vary. I enjoyed Season 1 greatly. I find Season 2 to be head-and-shoulders above Season 1, and so do many others who are active in the Westworld section. Let me invite other posters in GD to leave the safety of Sweetwater/GD and come to Westworld and decide for yourselves.
shareDifferent strokes.
shareIf you're going by the novelty effect, the fact that last year it was a totally new concept and this year it's not, I could understand why you'd say that. But I find the writing to be top notch this season. There's every indication of a well thought out and executed story arc, the writers know exactly where they're going with it and I can't wait to see what happens each week.
shareThe concept was cool in 1973 in the theater, and it was well done last year with additional characters added to the mix. This year is all noise and meaningless action. The writers are completely lost and are resorting to shoot-'em-ups instead of surprises and revelations.
shareClearly you're not paying very close attention. Things have been heating up action-wise since late last season. If you notice, the transition between season 1 and season 2 was seamless enough that someone could binge watch straight through and not even know where the season break was. There were lots of hints late in last year's run about the direction the story would take this year. Ford said that Wyatt would be the villain of his new narrative, and Dolores has certainly become that. He told William that the new story would be more to his liking - and we see that he had a plan for William, guiding him to the same destination Dolores is seeking out. Probably not a coincidence. Why does Ford want to bring them together?
What is Bernard doing? What agenda might he have, and what did he do between the time when most of the action in season 2 so far took place and the present - when he's in the mesa with the Delos mercs and their tech support staff? What happened to Elsie, or Charlotte for that matter? Is Bernard working alone or with someone else, like Dolores or Maeve? It seems likely Ford's consciousness survives inside the park's network. There are rumors he will re-emerge as a host sometime this season. That would be pretty cool.
And why haven't they shown us the outside world during the present time frame? Only in flashback. They've gone to great lengths avoiding the world as it is now. People arrived and left. But we never saw them outside. We don't know for sure that departing guests ever actually departed. We haven't seen one panicked meeting outside the park. Not one call from a wealthy family member to a government official demanding answers about their three-weeks-missing loved one. We haven't seen one live video call to the mainland. The closest we've come this whole time is Bernard's call to the ex, which we know was fake. There's a big reveal being hidden by this ducking and dodging. One I'm guessing will fundamentally change the nature of the story.
Westworld is definitely a show that demands the viewer’s attention, and rewards it. Unfortunately, it’s my experience that very few people pay attention to anything, any more. Over the past few years I’ve seen a big increase is posts asking questions about things that were clearly explained in the salient movie or show.
shareIt's a TV show. It's not my job to pay that close attention. I'm a writer/director and I don't get lost easily. If I'm lost it's because I'm bored. As I say, season 1 was great and this is a disappointment.
shareSeason 1 required you to pay attention too, if you really wanted to understand what was happening. If you don't like the show that's fine. Nothing is for everyone. But don't call it disappointing right after admitting you can't be bothered putting that much effort into watching. That just sounds foolish. Like you're a ten year old with ADD or something.
shareThe only thing duller than that show is this discussion.
shareWhich you started. The energy of an entity flows from the top down. You not only chose to be disappointed with Season 2, you chose, implicitly, to warn people away from it, by informing them that, in your frame of reference, Westworld gets worse in Season 2. You could not go quietly into your own good night. You needed to bleat aboubt it. For you, you are right. You’re not happy. For you to come on MovieChat General Discussion and tell novitiates that they are wasting their time to follow Westworld without posting WORD ONE in the Westworld arrea of MovieChat is arrogance boardering on poison. That is really unimpressive. Don’t bother to respond. I literally don’t care what you think any longer; and didn’t care so much on our initial encounter. Enjoy what you will, or, as you put it so eloquently, “different strokes” (a terrible TV show, and a bumper sticker of an alleged riposte).
shareThen why are you here? I've never understood why people hang out on boards for shows they don't like (except to be trolls). I can't stand Grey's Anatomy - but I don't subject myself to the stupid thing every week and then go on the show's discussion board to badmouth it. That makes no sense.
shareCould be better,I agree
shareI never watched the original 1973 film with Yul Brynner because I thought the premise was kind of limited, so the same thing applies to this new tv series for me.
But I do have fond memories of Evan Rachel Wood as Jessie in the tv series 'Once and Again' (1999-2002) when she was a young teenager.
I agree that there are some moments, especially with Evan Rachel Wood, but it's not enough. Compare it to The Americans or Get Shorty. This is not in their league.
