I love that you share my love of the Underworld franchise, Dazed, which is, I believe, concluded with Blood Wars. Let me ask a question of this general topic, using Dazed’s linked post as a portal to raising the question and not as the focus of it: Some are calling The Lord of the Rings a franchise. My understanding of “movie franchise” is “an open-ended series of films, begun with no predetermined end.” Bourne, James Bond, Star Trek, Star Wars are obviously franchises. TLOTR and Harry Potter have preordained conclusions; BUT “the works of Tolkien” and “the works of J. K. Rowling” do not. For the former, we have the (sadly, awful) Hobbit series (NOT a trilogy, a three-part blostfest), the prospect of films based on other Tolkien books, edited and embellished by his son. For the latter, we have the prospect of more Fantastic Beasts and whatever else this active writer chooses to create. Then, too, we could identify the Stephen King franchise, which I choose to do right now! I am a stickler for precise use of language. Bond novels and stories have been written by others after Ian Fleming’s death. So far, that that is not true of Tolkien and Rowling; nor of King; therefore, I recommend that the franchise should be named for the author, rather than for her or his specific work. The author is the zeitgeist of the franchise.

Currently, I would have to say the MCU.

Top 5:
1. Star Wars
2. MCU
3. Harry Potter
4. Indiana Jones
5. Star Trek

reply

The Thin Man series because Myrna Loy and William Powell are as ideal a pairing as one will ever find.

reply

Hmmm, I like a lot, but most franchises have some pretty good duds mixed in. These come to mind..

Indiana Jones
Alien
Lord of the Rings
Before Sunrise
Nightmare on Elm Street
Lethal Weapon
Beverly Hills Cop

Mad Max

I'm slightly obsessed with the MM films. When I first saw The Road Warrior as a kid in the early 90's it blew my mind, ever since then I've been fascinated with post apocalyptic stuff. I hope Miller gets to make another one.

reply

Sleepaway Camp, they are entertaining and i especially love the one liners in the sequels.

reply

Before 2015, I would have said Star Wars. Now it's Lord of the Rings.

reply

But croft you didn't say WHY!

reply

The others didn't tell either

reply

Rocky
Rambo
Die Hard 1-3
Indiana Jones
BTTF
Superman 1-3
Saw
Final Destination

Years ago I would have said the Elm street films too but with hindsight I only really like part 1 and 3.
