Will people ever miss the 00s?

You still hear a lot of people reminisce about the 80s, or 90s, but never the 00s.

Is it because it’s a decade that is hard to pin down?

reply

People born between 1985 and 1995 might miss the naughties, that would be their coming of age years.

reply

I sure do

reply

my son was born in 1992 - he will have plenty of good things to remember.

reply

It's because it's too soon to reminisce about them. 15 years ago no one reminisced about the 90s either. It'll happen.

reply

I’ve heard some say they miss things like iPods, blockbuster, and Instant Messenger.

reply

I still use my original 300 GB iPod every day in my car. Still going strong except the screen is messed up and the battery doesn't hold a charge.

Agree with AIM too. Spent a lot of time on there shooting the shit with friends. I think all and all, there was a huge leap of technology in the 2000's.

reply

I have an iPod Classic that I got off eBay 2 years ago. It’s great, I can use it for hours and sleep with it on if in a noisey place. Your phone you can’t really do that, as You’re either using lots of data or draining your battery or risk a fire if it’s charging in bed.

reply

I can understand that, and have heard the same. People are naturally going to miss things they enjoyed in the past, regardless of how distant -- or not -- the past may be.

reply

The bulk of my childhood will be sorely missed by myself

reply

What was special about it? Or something you look back fondly upon?

reply

Friends from school mostly.

reply

I think as we ease pass 2020 you will hear some things. I am not sure what, perhaps LOTR? Iphone? rise of blu ray/HD? Launch of MCU? I can't think of anything musically..

reply

I miss them already for the amazing indie movie renaissance. The 90s were good for indies, but there were so many good forgotten indie movies that I consider masterpieces from the oughts.

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
Igby Goes Down
The Dying Gaul
Mean Creek
The Squid and the Whale
L.I.E.
Twelve and Holding
The Chumscrubber
Thumbsucker
Little Miss Sunshine
Everything is Illuminated

Also I do have some music I reminisce about, mainly because I graduated from High School in 06. I was always into 60s and 80s music as my primary love, but here are a few that make me feel nostalgic about the 00s.

System of a Down
Rooney
The Decemberists (Still going strong)
Foo Fighters (I hated them then but they grew on me now)
Frou Frou
Postal Service
Death Cab for Cutie
The Black Keys (their new stuff doesn't do it for me but they had an amazing run in the 00s)
The Chemical Brothers
Weezer's return

I am very nostalgic for the decade already, but as I said it was my coming of age, Lord of the Rings is a huge touchstone for me, I cry every time I watch ROTK.

reply

Being John Malkovich! Wait, it was an indie, right?

reply

It was also 1998, but you could add Adaptation from 2002

reply

Ah, crap! Well then I'll add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind instead.

I think I had the release timing for Adaptation and Malkovich backward, because I was thinking 2001/2002 for it.

reply

Eternal Sunshine, excellent addition to the list

reply

I just watched Mean Creek - the movie made me think.

reply

That movie changed my life. It came out when I was 15, I probably watched it 15 times that year.

reply

I think the 60's,70's and 80's were the best decades and the nostalgia continues for them. For me it's a lot to do with the music.
The nineties were a bit meh, aside from a few good bands music turned to crap.
The noughties ARE hard to pin down you're correct. I'm heartened to see so many real bands are out there making real music of all kinds.
I think this decade we're in will mostly be remembered for Isis,Trump,Brexit and social media.

reply

It's funny how that works, isn't it? In the late 60's and the early 70' we were all nostolgic when it came to the 30s.
Bonnie and Clyde sort of started that whole craze. I remember us girls all copying Faye Dunnaway's look from that movie.

My mom always said that everything old is new again, but I digress.
People will eventually miss things about the early part of this new century once we get further into it.

reply

'00s music rocks!

Avril Lavigne
Linkin' Park
My Chemical Romance
Ja Rule
Britney Spears
Usher
Sean Kingston
Nelly
OutKast
Eminem
Blur
Destiny's Child
Mary J. Blige
Baha Men
Missy Elliot
etc.

Oh man.. Now I really miss the 2000s.

reply

I liked the rock resurgence of the 00s, and the r & b of the early 00s. Rock bands aren’t very popular anymore. I saw My Chemical Romance 3 times. Great band.

reply

Those emo days are over. Today hipster nerd culture dominates.

MyCR
Green Day
Blink-182
Sum41
Simple Plan
Evanescence

Miss 'em.

reply

We're not even 10 years removed from the late 00's. Give it time.

reply

Do people actually reminisce about the '90s? It was like last week. Who cares?

reply

The 90s were the last “off the grid” days. You weren’t just a phone call away. Social media didn’t exist. People bought cds and rented videos. For those who see technology as “big brother” and a complication to their life, the 90s is like some golden era.

If there is a video of people watching a performance, the comments say “wow nobody holding up a cell phone, they’re just enjoying it!”

And footage of people walking “look, people not looking at their phones as they walk!”

reply

That's all true. Something to think about.

reply

Good point. Plus there were public phones, which people used all the time.
