Dogs that smile

Have you ever had one that did, or seen a dog smile?

My last dog was the only one I've ever had that smiled. Her grin wasn't quite as big as this guy's, but it was equally cute.

She only did it when she thought she'd offended me. Like in the yard (well, patio) at the fence if I walked up and she started barking at me like she would a stranger. It was like she was saying "Oh my word! I'm so, so terribly sorry, didn't recognise you. Forgive me, pleeeease??"

reply

This is just about how my girl would smile:

But really I wanted to post this one, because lol!

The last dog my parents had could smile. He also learned how to ring the doorbell. When my dad walked him, he'd let go of the leash when they were two or three houses away from home. Smokey, a German shepherd, dashed ahead, and once at the front door he rang the bell to be let in, because hey, it's feedin' time!

reply

Nice! German Shepherds are very smart dogs.

reply

Smokey was almost right up there with Lassie's "Timmy's in the well"!

I wonder why it is some dogs smile, and most don't.

I love this one too:

reply

That's pretty close to Smokey's smile - plenty of teeth showing!

reply

Really? Then he had an adorable smile.

I love these smiling doggy photos/gifs. They make *me* smile! I've got to admit I'm surprised only you and I have known or had smiling pups, or find them appealing. Maybe there aren't a lot of dog-lovers here.

When I was a kid my mom told me her dog, when she was a kid, smiled. I'd never heard of such a thing and never saw it until I got my girl. My neighbour's dog, whom I loved and had spent a lot of time with, told me he smiled sometimes, but I never saw it.

Have you ever seen the video on YouTube called Denver the Guilty Dog?

reply

I had not, until now. I just watched a couple. Denver is quite the rascal!

🤔 I wonder if some dogs learn to smile by watching their owners or other humans, particularly those who show a lot of teeth. It's as though they learn to mimic what they see.

reply

Weirdly, I never got a bell ring that you replied. Yes, Denver was a rascal, but I know that when dogs "smile," it means they're showing submission, as in "I'm sorry for whatever it is I've done, forgive me!" and this guy (as well as most people) don't know that, and carry on punishing them :(. I admit I thought it was cute and endearing when my pup did it, and no doubt didn't let it go as soon as I should have either.

I wonder the same thing. Why do dogs do this? Did they always, one dog to another? Or is it because they're mimicking us?

reply

I think some dogs, smaller ones with squished faces (pugs) always look happy. Same with weiner dogs.

I had a dog named Wooderson (after Matthew McCouaghey's character in Dazed & Confused) who would smile whenever I got home from work or if he hadn't seen me in a little bit. I wish I could have captured in but I never could snap the picture quick enough. He was a feist mix and when he would smile, it was ALLL teeth and his nose would scrunch up a little bit. Cutest thing I'd ever seen! My boyfriend and I would talk to him a lot, call him our sweet boy and he would do that. I think he saw us smile at him and thought, OH I CAN DO THAT. I HAVE TEETH TOO.

reply

Yes, it happens too quickly to snap a photo of it, most of the time! I'm impressed with the people who managed to capture it.

My pup also scrunched up her nose at the same time, and it was adorable, although I do understand it comes from anxiety, thinking they've done something wrong, and wanting to please us.

God bless Wooderson ❤️

reply

All dogs look like they're smiling when they pant, I find.

reply

In a way yes, to us humans, but there is a difference between a dog that's just panting because it's overheated or whatever, and a dog whose mouth is also relaxed and panting, and a dog who's doing the submissive "smile."

reply

If they could smile, they would do so more than humans.

reply

:D I suspect you're right.

reply

Because they can lick their own balls.

reply

That only explains about half of dogs. You do realise half of them are female, right?

:D

reply

Of course, but I didn't want to get too lewd with that... If you know what I mean. "Balls" are safe, beyond that it's time to cover the childrens' eyes!

reply

*covers eyes* :D

Vulva is pretty safe.

reply

Mea Culpa; Amo Vulva
