What did you watch on this movie makin' week?(25/02-03/03)

Big shout-out to all the script writers in the place. Especially Shogun and Dewey, you guys were frick'in awesome. Story's still not over though. Or is it? Anyways.. I'd see Fincher on this.

My week:

A cure for wellness (2016 Netflix): Why did I watch this film? Why did they make it? All good questions but let’s not concentrate on that for now. This is a movie about a young Leonardo DiCaprio who’s forced by his employer to visit a hospital for people who are ‘not well’ on an Island where everything is not what it seems. Am I having a déjà vu here? Yes and no. Because this movie still manage to be unlike any other by throwing every single possible element of suspense and mystery in it. Like a pizza with every ingredient on the menu. Hard to digest? Yes. I have to mention that the cinematography was top notch though. Also, I learned that eels will devour an old dead body but won’t touch a young lady in her period. And if you swallow a good quantity of them (eels, not young ladies in their periods) your piss will be super magical. Hard to digest? Yes. 5/10

The perks of being a wallflower (2012 bluray): ‘’ An introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors who welcome him to the real world.’’A good and quirky coming of age romcom. I thought the movie felt genuinely real and true. Good ensemble work. 6.5-7/10

Raw (Grave 2016 DVD): This is another coming of age story but this one is unlike any other. It’s like a group of people met behind my back to find all the things that could get to me and then made this film. Things that get under my skin, thing that give the bad shivers and things that make me close my eyes like a little girl. And none of these things were even related to the gore content. I can take gore, I enjoy gore. It’s small details like scratching yourself excessively, animals being tortured, close up on a fail bikini waxing, the interminable sound of a honking horn and so on. I don’t know if I should give this movie a 1 for fucking with me like that or a 10 for succeeding. I’ll just give it a good rating because all in all, it’s a good movie. 7/10

Scream 4 (2011 bluray): Unlike the original, I enjoyed this one as much as the first time I saw it. There are so many things wrong with this film and it makes its charm.
Ex:
If you’re under a protection program and a murder occurs next to your house, it’s okay to attend a high school movie club the day after so you can impress some kids.
If you witnessed your friend’s murder, it’s okay to attend a horror-movie-secret-party the day after.
If you’re a cop and your wife just got stab in front of you it’s okay to shoot a warning shot 5 feet away from the killer.
The new generation is ready to sacrifice anything to get some fans.
Courtney Cox, God bless her, has a scary Ghostface killer face, I don’t know why she ruined such a beautiful face.
My rating: 7-7.5/10

iBoy (2017 Netflix): “After being shot, Tom wakes from a coma to discover that fragments of his smart phone have been embedded in his head, and worse, that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers.” My wife loved it. She can be so cute and naïve. The movie looks good but it’s not great. It’s not even really good. Because it’s too stupid. Ex: If you put your hand on someone’s mouth they won’t be able to make even the lightest sound. 5/10

I plan on watching Raw and A Cure for Wellness at some point, Scream 4 just like the rest of the Scream series I gave a 5/10, passable but I was never into it.

Extraction (2015 Netflix): "A former CIA operative is kidnapped by a group of terrorists. When his son learns there is no plan for his father to be saved, he launches his own rescue operation." Stars: Bruce Willis, Kellan Lutz, Gina Carano, D.B. Sweeney 5/10

Manhole (2014 Netflix): "A young girl is kidnapped by a serial killer. The serial killer uses manholes to kidnap and kill his victims. The young girl's older sister tries to save her before it's too late." Stars: Kyung-ho Jung, Yu-mi Jung, Sae-ron Kim, Dal-hwan Jo 6/10

It (2017 Netflix DVD): "In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shapeshifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town." Stars: Bill Skarsgård 8/10

Night of Something Strange (2016 Shudder): "Teenage friends out for beach week get unexpectedly detoured to a isolated motel where a deadly STD virus now runs rampant, turning those infected into the living dead." 4/10

Better Watch Out (2016 Shudder): "On a quiet suburban street, a babysitter must defend a twelve-year-old boy from intruders, only to discover it's far from a normal home invasion." Stars: Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller 8/10

Tokyo Raiders (2000 Amazon Prime): "When Ken doesn't show up to his own wedding in Las Vegas, his would-be bride Macy heads home for Hong Kong. There she finds Jon, also looking for Ken. Macy and Jon go to Tokyo together, where Ken's flat is teeming with members of the Ito gang. Jon and Macy escape, with the help of a private investigator who is also looking for Ken. So the question remains: where is Ken?" Stars: Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Ekin Cheng, Kelly Chen, Cecilia Cheung 6/10

ABCs of Death 2 (2014 Netflix): "Another 26-chapter anthology that showcases death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty" 5/10

For the Emperor (2014): "Lee Hwan is out of professional baseball after being involved in match fixing. He is recruited by gangster boss Jung Sang Ha to work for him as a loan shark. Over time Lee Hwan climbs the ranks of Jung Sang Ha's company as the game becomes one of blood, money and sex." Stars: Min-ki Lee, Sung-woong Park, Tae-im Lee, Jae-young Han 6/10

We really need some kind of word count or something for these post, because the stopping point always seems random on these things.

Au Revoir les Enfants -1987- Takes place at an all boys school run by priests during WWII.
A bond is formed between 2 students. One the students has a secret that will affect his very life. Brilliant - 8

Our Town - 1940 The classic Thornton play on the big screen with a very young William Holden.
Not the best adaptation but the cast and classic story made up for it. 7

Goodbye Mr. Chips -1969- The original version is one of my favorite movies of all time.
This version for me just fell flat. It missed the charm of the book and original film. - 6

The Happy Time - 1952 Stars Charles Boyer about a french family living in Ottawa in the 20's
It's a comedy and I found myself laughing a few times. A really nice movie about the trials and
tribulations of family life. 7.5

Genius - 2016- Based on a true story about editor Max Perkins and his work with Thomas Wolfe.
I'm not sure how accurate this film is but at times I was totally enthralled and other times I didn't care. -6.5

Pillow Talk -1959- Another classic romantic comedy with Rock Hudson and Doris Day.
These films are always fun to watch. 7

Side Street - 1950- Film noir starring Farley Granger.
Not a Granger fan but it seems I do like some of his movies. This one is helped by being directed by Anthony Mann.
They Live by Night was released at around the same time as this one even though it filmed a few years earlier.
This because of studio politics so Granger had two hit films playing at the same time.
In this one he plays a man who steals two hundred dollars only to find out it was actually $30,000.
The more he tries to do the right thing the deeper he gets in.
Add another one to the list. 7.5

SK I watched Cure last week and feel about the same. I think I rated it a little higher becasue
the cinematography was incredible.

I'm sure I saw Scream 4 but don't remember anything about it.
Wasn't a real fan of any of them to be honest.

Any nibbles on our film we wrote or are they too busy fighting over it?

reply

Hey!

Haven't seen yours but I remember you gave 5.5 to Cure.

Still waiting for Fincher's guy to call me back.

reply

Don't wait too long because people are talking about it.

Might only be a few of us talking but damn it we're talking!

I watched my all time favorite film, West Side Story, on Sunday, February 25th, that afternoon, at the Luna Theatre, up on Lowell, MA. It's as great a film as ever!

reply

Im not into musicals but we never know, I might enjoy that joint.

reply

I'm usually not a big fan of musicals on film, but West Side Story is an exception due to its subject matter, and the whole way in which it was put out, on both stage and screen.

reply

I have never seen this

reply

Well, the next time that West Side Story comes on television, or to an independent movie theatre in your area, got to see it! You won't be disappointed. Hope I've been of some help here.

Hey, mate!

I love your review of The Cure for Wellness. I did go back to look at my review for it, and I liked it!? Kinda!? Odd. In retrospect, I don't think I like it much lol. It is still beautifully shot.

Raw was amazing. I soo loved it. I don't remember _that_ much gore, but it was very unsettling and it made me look away at certain points. Also, anything where they show the brutality of a bikini wax gone wrong is A-OK with me.

I don't remember anything from Scream 4 except now they have cell phones...

The Ritual (2017)
Four mates go for a trek in Sweden. One of the mates hurts his knee, so now the mates have to take a shortcut through some *spoooky* woods, mate. Something is stalking the mates in the woods. The four mates start fighting and at a point two of the mates aren't mates anymore. Things escalate from there, mate. Will any of the mates make it out alive? I don't know, mate. You have to watch the movie to find out. So they use the word "mate" a whole lot. It's not a movie we haven't seen before, people in the woods, being hunted by something. There are some cool things they do with a flashback thing that gets incorporated into the environment one of the character's in. It's effective for what it is, and I generally enjoy this type of film, so, yeah, not half bad.

reply

I actually thought my review of The cure could have been one of yours when I read myself. I was so proud to attain such a level of expertise in my review. I'd be curious to read your review of this film if you still have it.

Yeah, Raw had a few flesh eating scenes we could qualify as gore but they didn't bother me half as much as the bikini wax scene. Urgh...

Thanks for dropping by.

reply

You've done well, young one (even if you're older than me... lol)!

Here is my review:

A young business exec is tasked to bring back the CEO of his corporation from a /mysterious/ wellness center in the Alps. This film has it all: Violent local history; inhospitable locals; creepily happy patients; a mysterious pretty, pale young woman kept prisoner; a man caught in the midst of a strange situation; ominous “aaah-aaah” music; and so on, and so on…. The first third of the film felt like it was a film that was trying to be a film, but not actually being one. After that the story clicked into gear. The music, setting and characters, although perfectly adequate and fitting, felt, again, like it was trying too hard, and are a bit tired at this point IMO. The reveal you could see coming a mile away. But despite that I enjoyed most of the film, it was very well shot, it was effective in the thriller aspect, I really liked Dane DeHaan’s performance (thought, for a 30 year old, he still looks a bit too young for the role). So, I liked it, but some aspects of it annoyed me.

OK, I don't remember liking it that much... Especially Dane DeHaan!!! My memory is a fickle mistress.

Murder on the Orient Express (2018)
Enjoy is not the right word. It was okay to look at but that's about all.
Spoilers ahead:
How he came to the conclusion he did where e******e werel involved in the murder was never explained. Just were.
Rating: 5/10

Baby Driver (2017)
Finally got round to seeing this one and don't see what the fuss was all about. It is okay as movie but nothing exceptional.
Rating: 6/10

Radius(2017?)
Australian/Kiwi sci-fi movie about death/life within a radius. Very intersting premise and almost executed perfectly. Slightly annoyed with the ending but it is not bad.
Rating: 9/10 - Highly recommended.

reply

Baby Driver: People praised it because the soundtrack is in sync witht he action. I found it fun and original but I also didn't find anything worth praising. 7/10

reply

Radius is Canadian 7.5/10. Would make a good TV series

Murder on the Orient Express was a disaster. 5.5/10

reply

Thanks for the correction on Radius. I don't know why thought it was Aus/Kiwi.

Agree with MOTOE being a disaster.

reply

Raw (Grave) is such a thrilling movie... I liked it a lot, when I saw it a couple of months ago... Glad you found it interesting

I watched it with a vegetarian friend thinking it would be a vegan-horror movie, but was quite surprised at it being a young woman's coming of age movie as well... A lot of fun to watch with a group of friends and a sure conversation starter (or stopper) of a movie 😉

reply

Sure is!

I see you were busy as usual, Stone. I saw "Alien Covenant". My review: Meh 6.4. The biggest problem is that it was just another re-hash of this tired old story.

Ridley, please STOP making these retreads, and move onto something else! The story has totally run out of steam!

😎

reply

I totally agree on Alien:Covenant. Really bad movie with no story, no suspense, nothing. You could see everything a mile away. This is one movie after Robin Hood that I am really disappointed with to do wth Ridley.

I would go 2/10.

reply

I thought it was 'fingeringly' terrible and at the end when she's getting whipped around by the spaceship on a rope was like a comedy spoof. Not to mention the alien was the lamest one I've ever seen. The alien that was imploded underwater in Resurrection after 10 seconds was more interesting than the one in Covenant. It was just so boring. Did they not play Alien isolation? That's how being around an alien should make you feel, not like your at Michael Bay's rodeo diner.

Also, hopefully I don't sound homophobic but why if they were trying to colonise a planet did they send a gay couple?

reply

Wow. You are one tough critic, Rob.

😎

reply

Not really but Alien:Covenant takes the cake. I was extremely disappointed with it. I liked Covenant and therefore was looking forward to this one. It was just a bad bad movie and especially coming from Ridley Scott, it was so disappointing.

reply

I think the main problem is that Scott is just re-hashing the same material. The series has become stale.
