For those that do not tip...

Do you frequent the same restaurants whilst not tipping?

reply

I do tip, 15 to 20% if I get good service. Waiters and waitresses work hard, and are paid very little in most restaurants.
That's the general custom here in America. I have noticed in most European countries if you tip 5 to 10% the wait staff
is delighted. One thing is universal: nobody is ever offended by a tip.

Interesting story: I was having lunch at an outdoor restaurant in Florence Italy, and there were four euros lying on the table. The waiter came by and picked them up. This was ironic because I had planned to tip him eight euros. I thought "Okay, you have determined your tip to be only four euros." That is the only time in my life that a waiter has done that.

Tipping is very uncommon in Australia. I think minimum wage here is a lot better than the US

reply

Thanks for that info...first Australian input...gooDay! Did I get that right?

reply

Almost it's G'Day!

๐Ÿ‘always wondered...never enough to google it though ๐Ÿ˜‰

I tip When I travel, but I don't tip in my country because there is no logical reason. If u tip the Waiter/waitress here, you probably get a friendly "I'm flattered, but I cant accept this" reaction. Waitresses have a decent salary here, and The average wage to restaurant price ratio is already very bad for some reason in Norway. So we feel slightly "robbed" just paying the food cost itself.

interesting and informative...thanks Chomsky

Makes no difference where I'm at - shitty service gets little , or no tip

reply

Totally reasonable I think

reply

I used to tip (or more accurately I am very selective of the restaurants where I tip). I have noticed recently that quite a lot of the restaurants add 10% service charge automatically. So, I look at the bill before tipping.

reply

That is kind of deceptive...here in the US?

reply

Good ole UK.

reply

Gotcha...in the states there is a practice of adding a gratuity to the bill if the party exceeds a certain number...usually six...what you describe sounds lousy...you are smart to scrutinize the bill!

reply

I've always assumed that the service charge goes to the owner, rather than the staff, so I end up tipping anyway...
