Bill Belichick

Regardless of the "report" this morning involving the Garropolo trade I wonder given the persona of Belichick how many more years he will stick with the Patriots? The man loathes to have his boat rocked and is enough of a student of pro sports to know that all good things come to an end eventually. He has to know he could write his own terms and go to a fair number of NFL cities where he would be given a long honeymoon to turn around a franchise. Cleveland would be a promising team as it has certain pieces in place and has quite a bit of draft stock to work with. Given his reputation as Darth Hoodie is it within the realm of possibility that the rumors of discontent were put out indirectly by him to force a decision by Kraft to change directions?

reply

He's been a winning coach for them. He'll most likely stay with the Patriots until he retires.

reply

IMO he's not that kind of guy. Look at who his boss was early in his career. A lot of people said that Parcells should have stayed retired as a Giant but that did not happen. I think Parcells and Belichick have the same cold calculating attitude towards their careers. Further, I don't see Belichick sitting still if the team goes through several subpar seasons. The level of success the Patriots have just gone through has set the bar pretty high even for Belichick. Further, I could see New Englander's (having known and know them) develop the same let's run him out of town attitude that they gave Dick MacPherson, Raymond Berry, Pete Carroll, and others who failed to win sooner than later. It would fit Belichick's ego to go to a place like Cleveland where he would be perceived as the oasis in the vast desert of poor Brown's seasons. Further, having coached there in the past he is aware of the status that would be bestowed on him if the Brown's won a Super Bowl or two.

reply

I think he will indeed. I don't think he'd want to start anew, again. Probably too old, he feels.
I am very much looking forward to Jon Gruden returning , btw. I love him.

reply

Yes, I believe he will retire from The Patriots.

reply

NY Giants fan (i know...i know...awful season)
I cant stand this guy
I hope he retires in health to a warm clime
But ill never stop hating this guy

reply

Unless Mara hires him...

reply

Well now you just made me stfu!
Can you imagine the media blitz?!?

reply

He would never go to NY with the media scrutiny. He wants to go some place where he knows his butt will get kissed without question. Cleveland would be just right and if Bud Adams were still around then the Titans. Not that Bud was easy to get along with but even he could keep his blow hole closed for a few years to land BB.

reply

Hard to say
I could see him as the Big Boss trying to make it work in Cleveland with his ( well deserved) ego

reply

Everybody talks about the NY media scrutiny, but I wonder how much of a factor that really is. He has to deal with the media now and has been doing it as a head coach in a major market for many years. Media access is controlled and scheduled in advance.

I defer to your knowledge of the Browns situation. I certainly would be very happy for their poor, long-suffering fans if he did end up there.

reply

I don't think the Boston media is very hard on him but it certainly helped that he won early in his Patriots career. I don't think that anybody regardless of how much they won stays a media darling forever.

reply

The Giants beat the Patriots twice for the Super Bowl

reply

Sure as hell did!
By a wing and a prayer both times but still...we ash-canned those Pats!

reply

And I LOVED watching you guys do it, since I loathe the Pats!

I read the ESPN story and thought it was just a weak gossip piece. The Garropolo thing was a football-style "first world problem". They were going to pay $18 million per year and take that kind of salary cap hit for an unproven backup when their starter is Tom Brady? Seems unlikely to me.

reply

There is a certain logic to it when you think about it. The Patriots have unceremoniously parted company with players deemed approaching the end of their productive careers so why should it be any different with Brady given the outlook that Belichick has on personnel. Also, remember that BB's one time boss Parcells famously noted that if he is expected to cook the meal then he should have a say as to buying the ingredients. I think Belichick has the same philosophy and is one not to get caught up in the celebrity aspect of players. The public's need for a hero has them wanting star players hanging around longer than what is realistic. Everybody was all for Payton Manning staying as long as he wanted but when production fell to Earth like a rock everybody was wondering who the big idiot was for letting Payton hang on until the SB was in the Bronco's bag.

reply

Garropolo was a nice insurance policy and Kraft can certainly afford it, but he judged that the drama that goes along with having such a high profile backup would have been detrimental to the team. Either way, he's making a bet. But you're right that he also made a bet about the effect of the trade on the Belichick relationship and it may prove to be costlier than he would have liked.

reply

Him and Brady have no interest in being without each other. They're going to retire together.

Both of them are tough acts to follow, so neither is interested in breaking in the new guy.

reply

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns offered the number 4 overall pick this coming spring to the Patriots and New England apparently refused the deal.

reply

He's a jerk and a cheat, but one of the best coaches of all time. I hate him.

He came from a winning Cleveland team, before they turned into the Ravens.

I'm channeling my inner Madden, I could be a sports anouncer.

"Whom ever gets the most points is gonna win for sure" see... easy peasy!

reply

Super-obvious sports commentary is funny.

"They're going to want to mix up the run with the pass." "They really have to convert those third downs."

reply

Real talk!

'If they can avoid major injuries they should have a chance'

reply

lol yeah, that's what I was going for. Funny Shit, you guys get it man.

that's been done before in sports stand up comedy, right?

reply

Got it beavis

'If the team plane doesnt crash Detroit might win this afternoon'

ETA: im sure this has been done
All good though
This crap writes itself

I don't watch football anymore. Should get into Sports more if I get working fulltime and off disability. Life insurance companys are always hiring but I don't have a car, could sell my soul to a trucking company for a year and live life on the road. Shower when I fuel up hehe. More of a obsessed music headcase type of person. Trying to outgrow that.

I watch tv a ton too though, celebrity worshipping. Never did sports so I don't mancrush over my favorite players.

Why don't you go bang Eli Manning you homo. JK : )

reply

Oddly ive cut down on sports the last few years too
Im interested in good (and often crappy) movies and TV shows now...i just still follow The Yankees and Giants a bit

The trucker life sounds appealing...a pretty, flirty, diner waitress in every state and those truckers make a ton of dough too
If i had it to do over...i think id drive a semi and flirt with sexy waitresses
My office gig is really starting to kill me

The UFC event on Sunday night was so bad, I muted the sound a few times. At one point the expert analyst said "it's not going to be easy to submit Johnson from here". Less than ten seconds later he was choked and tapped out.

Someone should tell them it's ok not to talk for a few seconds. Take a breath. Perhaps enjoy a sip of a tasty beverage.

reply

I swear sports-talkers must be paid by the word
A lot of them seem like they've taken a few hits too many
