Hey chums...

What's your favourite song from a regular TV show or movie?

This one isn't mine, I just thought it was a good starter number.

Your shot!

Here's a follow up for those who are in the mood for some decent cabaret.

You know I like a bit of Who and so this is, of course, a great piece.

But are there any songs within shows or films which you particularly like?

Me...subtle? XD

reply

[deleted]

That's a perfect example of what I'm talking about (Also the only AHS season that I watched).

I was hoping for some resolution in either Zefram Cochrane or Spock's story and none came forth.

Apparently The Orville is going to have a musical number Dazed so best get the two of yourselves caught up with the story :)

reply

[deleted]

Yeah that Uhuru singing was trippy (And started that Spock thing in the modern remakes) but 'her' dancing in Star Trek 5 was eye gouging!

The Orville is pretty good, better than Discovery by a country mile. Not as funny as Red Dwarf because it actually tackles Next Gen type plots with a smidgen of humour thrown in to keep it from being DMCA'd as anything other than a science fiction parody. I'd recommend it!

Nothing like Ted, or any of his others shows.

That's good!

I think I can top it though ;) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcC-DfQ51u0

I still haven't figured out how to capture a youtube link on my stupid phone so I'll just say it. I Could Be So Good For You from Minder

reply

That is a great opening number and I'm happy to meet a fellow Minder fan but I was hoping for a song within a show or movie, not one to score it.

Have you any suggestions for tunes within that criteria?

reply

I'm not really sure what you mean. Do you mean the song needs to be playing during the show. Not just opening credits?

reply

Yes somesunnyday, a song that is played within the fiction itself and not music associate with our viewing of it.

If other characters in the fiction can hear it then that is what I'm looking for 😉

reply

Do you mean favorite original song specifically or can theme music or musical score be included? Also would it have to be something that was included in the film itself or something done for the credits only?

For me one of my favorite original songs for a movie is "May It Be" from Fellowship of the Ring:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJVxEaGrHS4

My favorite score is probably "Welcome to Jurassic Park":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msimASAXoys

Favorite in movie song is probably "Men in Tights" from Robin Hood: Men in Tights just because it is the funniest song I have ever seen\heard in a film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G59JnM4JKNQ

reply

The Men in Tights song is the kind of song I was looking for but you've suggested a nice bunch there ;)

reply

ah I see. So songs that were like actually song in the film or TV and not song 'over' it. I wonder if I can think of others. Maybe like "Day-O" or "Jump in the Line" both song in Beetlejuice.

I have a hard time thinking of ones i liked besides the more comedy purposed ones.

reply

Comedy is fine, but yes. Songs sung in shows and movies by characters in them.

Here are two examples of songs which are both funny and sung by characters from the fiction they are in:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB_1GU3V2UQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uai7M4RpoLU

Both an "I'm" in the title but that's about as much as they have in common.

reply

Ah both of those are gold too. Mel Brookes and Trey Parker/Matt Stone are really good with comedy songs in film/TV. I am struggling though to think of some non comedy songs and for some reason all I can imagine is the songs from Wizard of Oz and the few times the characters sing in Lord of the Rings. There is so much out there but I am just limited right now in remembering them.

reply

When it pops in it pops in. I've just got one of those heads that picks up on songs and recalls them with no logical association that I can think of years later.

Even little bits, like the start of this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXtIvIVuGa4 pop in years later.

I'm hoping this thread has us show the best of music in TV/Film from our community here.

reply

Stargate sg1 and antlantis intro.

reply

Oddly enough I just posted this Alice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXtIvIVuGa4

But it's more about music inside a show/movie and not an overture or theme associated with it that I'm looking for.

reply

Ok...then tomb raider 2001 main theme...the movie sucked, but the soundtrack is pretty good.

reply

If Lara Croft, or anyone else in the movie, sang a song or did a musical skit then that might work.

I don't recall that happening in the movie though, perhaps you could remind me of it.

Sorry about the significant other passing by the way :(

reply

No...no one is singing...maybe,les miserables 2012.

reply

Les Mis has a few good numbers in it :)

reply

You check also Mama mia and ricky and the flash.

reply

I like the theme from Cheers.
Also the theme from The Greatest American Hero.

reply

No Ally McBeal numbers from her on the piano Margo?

reply

Never watched that show. I did see clips of that strange little dancing baby. LOL!
Hooked on a Feeling!

reply

i was more a flying toasters person at the time but that CGI baby certainly was an early Internet phenomena!

reply

Now that you reminded me, I had to go watch him on YouTube! Still strange, and now I have OOOGAchuckaOOOGA OOOGA going through my head!
I do like the song though.

reply

Original song, or song that is performed but not original?

Until it is clarified, first few that popped in my mind:

TV show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3t3IKlXqFU

Movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dzc-bLsmMxg

All of them from The Commitments, but this one the most. And on second though, this one may not be regular, but it's also not a musical per se... IDK, I just know I love it!

Movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lya4w3gkgWg

Is any of this what you're looking for? lol

reply

All three great choices Mina!

You've understood the thread perfectly, songs performed within a fiction, no the theme or overture (All are welcome though!)

A movie inspired by your Cat Ballou is Matt Stone and Trey Marker's Cannibal: The Musical which has this great singalong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7Q9ZEdOLSE

Great movie and well worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

reply

This is a great thread, Reality!

I'm not sure if I've seen Cannibal: The Musical, or I've though of seeing it lol. Great song though.

Since I've gotten what this is about here are some more:

Michael Caine in Little Voice

In Heaven from Eraserhead
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmyzYBeGrE8

Stone'enge from Spinal Tap

More will come to me eventually, I'm sure.

🎵 All excellent choices Mina! 🎶

As for good ol' Michael Caine let's not forget this weepy https://youtu.be/tfI_N0vyxaI?t=1m54s

Oh, I have not seen that one! But the puppets got me thinking about this one:

Random one from OZ:

I'll always love a bit of ABBA:

reply

You're terrible Muriel!

Love that movie, even without the ABBA who lift it into a precious place for everyone who loves music 👍

I've not seen OZ, but it does remind me a little bit of this from Flight of the Conchords: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pVT_mvvZLo

Bowie was always awesome but that particular routine is an epic one which is fondly remembered by many, many people. A sad loss but what a giving talent.
