What did you watch last week? (10-08/10-14)

Hey friends! Y'all made me laugh, I just read the posts on the other thread. Y'all are crazy. But aren't we all? From Canada to Bulgarie. Yes sireee!

Ok, so here's my short movie week:

Hacksaw Ridge (2016 Netflix) : At first there is a touching story about two brothers, then it quickly changes into the vapid and uninspired love life of one of them. After this, it suddenly turns into a fun boot camp comedy, courtesy of Vince Vaughn. I never liked Andrew Garfield as an actor so it didn’t help but the story got less interesting as it became all about him (Casey Affleck could have played the role better I think.) The fact that the guy doesn’t want to kill is one thing but refusing to touch a weapon in training is just stupid. So that was the shaky first hour. Then the war begins, with all the horror that comes with it. The special effects were impressive and the violence was intense and bloody shocking. I expected no less, thank you Mel. 7.5/10

Kung Fu Yoga (2017 Netflix): I didn’t think Jackie Chan could do worse than Chinese Zodiac (2012) but this was even more terrible. It’ very hard to find one single positive aspect. I turned it off when there was about 30 minutes left. And that comes from a guy who enjoyed Kung Fu Master (2009). 2/10

Totat Recall (2012 Netflix): They made the story boring and the acting was in the ‘’I don’t even care’’ department. The graphics were nice and I enjoyed the settings but this was a waste of everyone’s time imo. I knew I should’ve stay away but since I saw the original a few days ago I decided to ty it. I regret it. 4/10

Here is what I watched:

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) 9/10
Cult of Chucky (2017) 7/10
The Conjuring 2 (2016) 8/10
The Craft (1996) 6/10
The Lure (2015) 10/10
The Box (2009) 7/10

reply

I can't find The Lure (2015) - must be a foreign language film
I look forward to Blade Runner down the road
The Conjuring 2 I would rate a little lower.

reply

The Lure is a Polish musical horror film about two mermaid sisters who sing and eat people. It was recently released by the Criterion collection.

reply

Your the second person I see mentioning The craft here. I saw this I was maybe 15. wonder how it would hold up on rewatch.

The box: a very strange movie this is. Didn't like it the first time but was better the 2nd. 6.5/10

Hey Jequs (sorry for skipping the other letters), the main thing about this thread is the pleasure in sharing opinions on movies. Thanks for your post but I think we would all appreciate just a little input on your viewings. If you don't feel like it, simply rating them gives us already a good idea.
You actually watched a lot of great movies man!

Age of Ultron: I think I liked it more than most people did. 7.5/10
Jacob'S ladder: In my top 50, amazing and powerful movie. 9.5/10
Donnie darko: need to rewatch but I think I liked it less than most. 7/10
Filth: Solid acting, great movie. I loved the atmosphere. 8/10
Blade Runner: also in my top 50 9/10
Creep: I think it worked well and had potential to be even longer and bigger. 7.5/10
Basketball Diaries: in my top 20! 10/10

Hey SK. They do tend to go on don't they. They're all a little cray cray if you ask me.
Another slow week for me. Hard to watch movies when your eyes are full of tears.

The Apartment-1960- Just a plain great movie. -8.5

Eating Raoul-1982- It's a black comedy cult film about a couple who kill swingers and steal their money
so they can open a restaurant. -7

Mystic River-2003- Great stars and great acting. Penn and Robbins were great in this movie.
For me that's where it stopped. It's a convoluted and uneven story. They added so much information
and tried to tie all these characters together that for me it got ridiculous. -6

Started to watch season 2 of People of Earth.
Continuing with Sunny

Totally agree on Total Recall.

reply

Mystic River - I still remember loling at Sean Penn's Oscar moment.

reply

''Hard to watch movies when your eyes are full of tears.'' Haha, that's funny. Oops, was I not suppose to laugh? As my wife would say in her native language: Yako. (it's a sympathetic word)

The apartment: On my watchlist
Mystic River: read the book then saw the movie. It helped me enjoy it a bit more I think. 7/10

reply

You can laugh. Everybody else seems to think pain is funny.
Your wife is a saint by the way. You hold on to that one.

reply

Wow, it'S like you really know her. She is the most patient and compassionate girl I ever met.

Pain is not funny man... pain sucks.
here's my prescription:
-5 episodes of That 70's show
- 3 songs from Placebo
-1 Chris Farley movie

reply

I don't know her specifically but yeah, I knew that girl too.

Great prescription.
I'll add some booze to it and consider it the perfect day.

reply

Boom! you got it! When my dog died I got drunk on Amaretto and watched a bunch of That 70's show. Same when I had my heart broken.

Did you ever listen to any PLAcebo before though? Rare are those who know the band but we are like a family.

reply

I don't know a lot of their music but I have heard them.
They've got some good songs if I remember correctly.

Event Horizon (1997) - a good first hour and it seems as if the writers didn't know what to do. The premise was good but the execution was bad. Why this has a cult following is beyond me. 6/10

Meadowland (2015) - a young married couple's son is kidnapped and probably dead. A year later we check in on the couple who are struggling with the loss. The movie doesn't really go anywhere. The ending is weird and nothing is resolved. The only thing the movie proves is that Olivia Wilde can act. I thought she gave a good performance in a driftless movie. 6/10

Paths of Glory (1957) - a great anti-war movie from Stanley Kubrick with great performances from Kirk Douglas and George McCready. No Oscar noms for this movie is just crazy. A great battlefield scene at 29 minutes focused on Douglas leading the charge. 9/10

Resident Evil (2002) - I watched this at the behest of croft a poster on here. This is not as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't realize it was a zombie movie. Milla Jovovich is hot and she spends a lot of the movie is some form of undress. The movie and I assume the entire franchise is geared toward teenage boys. 6.5/10

Touch of Evil (1958) - a haunting and complex film noir with some great cinematography. Orsen Welles was great as the grotesque villain. Heston was miscast. A whole bunch of cameo appearances. 8/10

Diabolique (1955) - first time seeing this one. A wife and mistress of a cruel school headmaster conspire to kill him. Great atmosphere and some sold performances. Hitchcock wanted to do this movie but lost out on the book rights. The ending is open to interpretation. This is a french language movie. 8.5/10

The Grapes of Wrath (1940) - great depiction of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression following a family from Oklahoma to California. Some may think it is pro communist but I think it is pro survival. This movie is comfort food for the mind. 8.5/10

I Walked with a Zombie (1943) - A Canadian nurse goes to the Caribbean to care for a woman who is in a trance like condition. Not a bad little movie at only 68 minutes. Some good voodoo scenes and a great ending. Zombies were a lot more docile in the 1940s. 7/10

Cache (2005) - another french language film which won a bunch of awards back in 2005. A man and his wife start receiving videotapes of themselves going about their daily lives. The husband suspects who the perpetrator is and has to confront some ugly things about his past. The movie is one big allegory re collective guilt and memory. 7.5/10

reply

hownos you watched some great movies this week.

Diabolique is one of my top 10 of all time.
Paths of Glory is another great movie.

Grapes, Cache, Touch of Evil are all outstanding.

reply

Thanks. First time seeing Diabolique - what's your opinion on whether Christina was alive at the end or not.

reply

I like to believe
that it was a set up and she is alive.
The only problem with that is why would they still make everybody think she's dead.
So the mystery continues.

reply

Paths of Glory: on my watchlist

Resident Evil: Good for what it is. 6/10

Caché: had never heard of it. Thanks

Strange Days and Goodbye Solo.

"I Am the FBI."

reply

Again? or was it someone else last week?

Strange days: 8.5-9/10

reply

Jason X
Wonder Woman

reply

Not seen'em

reply

The Case For Christ (2017) was the only movie I watched last week that I hadn't already seen.

reply

OK, but there is no rule about not mentioning those that were rewatch. Thanks for the post.

reply

Ok. This is my first time responding to one of these so I wasn't sure.
In that case, I rewatched August Rush.

reply

If you feel like it we also enjoy reading comments or ratings so we can have input on movies we never saw or compare thoughts.

reply

I read posts more than comment on them (as you can see my total is only 100 and I've been here since right before the imdb boards closed) but I appreciate that.

I just remembered another movie I rewatched last week was Backcountry.

I have only seen Total Recall. I agree with you. But how about that lift through the center of the Earth, tho? Cool and totally something that could work. Also, lense flares galore!!!

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
Eggsy is back, and he's a proper spy now. He has his colleagues, his girl, his mates. And then a delightfully evil Julianne Moore makes a mess because she wants to make drugs legal? So he goes to America for help from The Kingsman's brother chapter, The Statesmen. There a surprise awaits. Blah blah blah, fighting fighting fighting, ELTON JOHN, robots, the good guys save the day in the last minute. Not as good as the first one, still fun though. The performances were great. The story was a little on the blah side. The fight scenes were a little disorientating. THE SOUND LEVELS WERE DEAFENING! Still, it had some fun moments, but I probably would've liked it less if I didn't see it on the big screen. A solid 6 out of 10 robot arms.

reply

haha, always enjoy your reviews. From the trailer I kind of expected everything you mentioned.

reply

Yup, we seem to be on the same page often when it comes to these things. The friend I was with, who didn't actully know what movie we were going to be seeing and hasn't seen the first one, liked it very much. So maybe you have to not to have seen the first one to _really_ enjoy this one. I wouldn't say it was a waste of time, but a bit of a let down. And also, not enough Channing Tatum, which is something I never thought I would say in my life.
