Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea or The Assassination of Jesse James?

Two riveting, powerhouse performances from one of Hollywood's best actors. Which do you think he gave the best performance in? I think he portrayed grief and desolation almost perfectly in MBTS yet I might may have to give the nod to his work on Dominik's beautiful masterpiece.

I'd have to watch Jesse James again to answer that accurately... it's been ten years since it came out. Both were great films though. Is there a specific scene in Jesse James that stands out above Manchester?

I think the closing sequence of the film showcases Affleck's best acting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHKE_L76JG4

I have always maintained that great acting is just as much in bodily expression as it is in line delivery, and this is just an impeccable exhibition of that.

I know the scene's been played to death like a hit record that's lost all its impact... but still the body language... the way his body naturally shields itself from his wife's emotion is way more powerful here.

It reminded me a lot of what Joaquin Phoenix did in the opening scenes of The Master... a manifestation of pure visceral pain that made you wonder if they were doing internal harm to themselves

Thanks for sharing that scene... it's a great film and I'll consider those thoughts the next time I watch it.

Manchester by the Sea. It's like Casey was born for that role. However, he always looks natural in any coward asshole type of roles. The face, expression, mannerism, everything just fits. Like a glove!

Neither. This year's oscars were a wash. Nocturnal animals deserved best screenplay, picture and actress for Amy Adams, not to mention art direction. And director for Tom Ford.
