Absolutely, Watching is totally legal. We also do not host the movies, we link to them.
They should come up with a better legal system. What I would do is charge 30 dollars for basic cable... then maybe 1.00 for hd movies, .50 cents for a premium cable episode, .25 for a song, 1.00 for an album. Most people would be willing to pay for reasonable prices, and I agree they're too high but on the other hand the bootleg and torrent sites are killing smaller films. The reason they keep rebooting every thing is because no one will finance anything risky because they can no longer recover the losses on home video. Their thought process is that it's safer to make a fourth reboot of Spiderman, then try something new and exciting.
The irony of piracy is that most people spend the same as they used to spend at video stores and music stores... but instead of giving money to the movie studios... they are giving it to the telecoms and tech companies instead. Obviously, if you are the type who never goes outside then you probably are saving lots of money if all you do is watch shows all day. But for the average person who used to rent a few movies a week... buy a few cds every month... you are now spending over a hundred a month for cell phone maintenance and data. My point is that most of us are still spending a good chunk of money, but it's not going to right people... it's going to parasites who have nothing to do with creating our entertainment.
I think the next big shift will depend on the issue of Net Neutrality. Most people don't understand it, but to put it simply... it would give an advantage to big corporate sites over smaller ones. This might change the pirate issue drastically because a big site like Netflix or Hulu would have much faster data transfer than a bootleg site. I don't know how this will all play out but you should all keep on top of it because it might end up changing the game once again.
TLDR: I don't want to be gouged by cable companies... but I also think we should give something to the filmmakers.
I agree people would feel less inclined to seek out torrents if some of the legitimate ways we access movies and shows these days were not so damned expensive these days.

The argument about companies losing money is pretty irrelevant with me because I only ever watch films I wouldn't pay to go and see at the cinema in the first place anyway, so no money is lost. I still go to the movies when there are films I want to see and I think are worth paying for. Last time I was at the movies was on Sunday night for Alien Covenant, which I sat all the way through till the end of the credits to see if there was anything tagged on the end. There was - it was about how many jobs (15,000 I think it was) had been created for the making of the movie.
Yes, that whole thing about some countries not getting a US show for sometimes even a year or more later than it debuted in the US -- that's effed-up. Even when it's relatively close it still suck regarding spoilers, like there are a lot of shows that a new episode airs several days or weeks in the UK, for example, after it aired in the US. So a bunch of resourceful UK-ers are just finding a torrent so as not to be late to the party.
If they stopped that nonsense and just bought in a new show in ALL countries, people wouldn't have to find backdoor ways to view it.
Agree with the concurrent release dates... idiotic not to make the adjustment in this day and age.
shareHBO airs Game of Thrones simultaneously internationaly (to the best of my knowledge). That of course means that I have to get up at 4 a.m. to watch it... which I don't. But there's also another airing the same evening. And I think they do same/next day airing for most of their own production. That leaves out all the people who don't have HBO of course. But Fox International is also doing something similar with shows like The Walking Dead and Legion. Same day, with allowance for subtitling/dubbing, and time zone delay. That's a good step in the right direction when it comes to international audiences.
But that leaves out a lot of shows that you get with big delay. Or that don't get aired at all! And it applies not only to US shows.
Same with movies that just don't get released.
And don't get me started on Netflix (the supposed champion for anti-piracy) and Amazon, launching their service without localizing their content (The little that they have. Where I live. Last time I checked.).
So, yeah, it is nonsense. And the current system for international distribution is just fostering torrenting.
Yeah, and the arrogant attitude of American social media users, who stateg that if people don't want to be spoiled for a show they're following, they should stay off all social media until they've seen the latest episode.
Avoiding its discussion page is a no-brainer for not getting spoilers, but to have to avoid ALL social media?
That was one of the most irritating things about the IMDb boards for an individual TV show that had a US airing days, weeks or months ahead of the rest of the world. To just have to stay away and not get to discuss a show --- and then when you finally see the whole season (the only time it was safe to go anywhere to talk about it) you got American posters going "Why are you talking about that season now? That was weeks ago."

shareI used to live in the US and there were many Americans in my life who are still my favorite people of all time, but yes, in a more general sense there's a loooootttt of egoism in some of the ways they tend to feel about things in terms of stuff like this.
shareYou might not have seen them at the theater... but you probably would've paid for some home video. Almost everyone has pirated at some point, so I'm not here to scold people, especially the young who don't know any other life... but simply to explain the wrong people are taking the money.
My guess is that over time the movie studios and tv networks will slowly be absorbed by the tech companies who have allowed people to steal their property. The problem is when Google and Apple own the content... they will then be incentivized to stop the piracy because the property now belongs to them instead of other people. Same goes for Verizon, ATT, Sprint etc. As I said, it's important to watch Net Neutrality, because once it's in the tech companies interest... it will probably be slowly weakened so we will be forced to watch Netflix because the pirate streams will be too slow... especially as data becomes 4k and higher.
I remember thinking the same about music way back before iTunes changed everything.
I was building a CD on the Walmart website, where you could pick songs and they'd burn them to CD and mail the custom CD to you.
There was one artist that refused to participate (I can't even remember who now) and the song I wanted was not available. Thinking it was a contract dispute with Walmart, I looked at other options. It was the same everywhere.
So I used google to see if I could find a vendor selling that artist. All of the results were how to download the song on Limewire.
It took less than 10 minutes to download the software, search for the song and download the mp3.
So, I thought, why the hell not look for the rest of the songs? I had every song in about 15 minutes after that. Easy, convenient, free.
I don't advocate piracy and I haven't done much free downloading since, but my point is that I was willing to pay for what I wanted. The difficulty in doing so drove me to Limewire. I'm sure I'm not alone in my experience.
It seems the movie industry hasn't learned from that.

I agree with this aavfreak. I had the soundtrack for the Power of One on cd years ago and unfortunately it broke. Trying to find another copy of it was impossible. I could find it second hand for over $100. So yeah, I got it another way. Just like movies that I would pay for, but the studio hasn't released them, or they are no longer available. I saw an interview with Christian Slater saying that he didn't even have a DVD copy of Pump Up the Volume.

shareAnd what are those sites? Because I'm really starting to get worried. My favourite used to be Mininova...shut down. Torrentz...shut down. Then Kickasstorrents... shut down. And unlike before, they're not coming back up.
What do we have left now? TBP : lots of torrents but shitty interface. 1337x : nice interface but torrents often take a couple days to reach the site... Same with RARBG and those other secondary sites leeching off the big ones.
So if anyone has any ideas what my next big torrenting site should be, I'm all ears. But this is really starting to feel like the end as we know it. Might start on Kodi or something.

shareExtraTorrent was a complete pain in the ass with all the pop up ads but it is still a shame to see it go because it was still useful at times.
I prefer using private trackers though.
