reply

I know. But if it helps find the site I'm for it.

reply

Not so huge on Desktop http://imgur.com/a/pds2q

reply

I've seen that too,but what is it?

reply

Huge Ads. See my link above....

reply

There should be a "follow" button to let you get notifications even if you're not participating in that discussion.

reply

So that's the new one?

reply

No, I'm just suggesting that a new feature be added. Basically a follow button at the top of each thread to let you get notifications of new replies even if you're not participating in the discussion.

reply

I was mentioning that. I hope Jim gets us a new feature where we can view movies that we are interested on a list. Like what imdb had. Make it closer to what imdb had. See who posted on it.

reply

I agree about the follow button. But definitely not for the "Recommended For You" feature seeing as they're just humongous ads.

reply

Does anyone see that there are too much commercials here ,or is just me?

reply

It's weird, I've been clicking on it in several different posts and nothing happens. Maybe an issue with my Javascript...

reply

It's your adblocker that is preventing you from seeing it.

reply

Oops... Thanks, I was starting to wonder lol.

reply

I was wondering what that was as well. It is great to see my Ad Blocker is doing what it should be doing.

reply

Right? I wouldn't have known what was going on without this thread.

reply

There needs to be some transparency on just how much it takes to run this site. I doubt people would donate as frequently; however, if we are so bugged by ads, maybe there is some compromise?

reply

Yeah, that would be nice... At the start, Jim said he could fund it himself. Maybe he bit off more than he can chew but still wants to ensure the site is free to use, so he resorts to ads? I have noticed some lag, especially when a video ad is playing.

EDIT: At least for the "Recommended for You" tab, it can be collapsed like posts.

reply

I would guess he always planned to make money, but nothing wrong with that. The only thing I would say is if you're going to accept donations you need full transparency so people know if the site is truly sustainable. If he's going to run it for a year and then cut and run without someone else taking over... it would be just as bad as what imdb did to everyone, except imdb took only people's time not money. I'm hoping a happy balance can be achieved where he can make some money, at least enough to compensate him for his time and we can have a nice site to post about movies. This site doesn't seem to have heavy traffic yet so I'm not sure how there would be any unforeseen costs... this is why my guess is that he planned to make money and not simply fund it himself.

reply

I guess that would make sense. I still want to think the best of him, though. I mean, it's a whole lot of work to make a site from scratch as far as I know. He seemed to have the best intentions in preserving IMDb's archives and giving the forum refugees a new home. If he can make money off it, then good for him; I just hope he doesn't take it too far.

reply

The traffic is small... so I'm guessing he didn't get many donations, so he doesn't really owe us much in that respect. But he did specifically create a site for a disenfranchised group of people who were disillusioned because they were abandoned so I would hope he has strongly considered that responsibility. I would feel more confident if I didn't see ads only because he explicitly stated he could fund this himself... so his decision to add them means it was either part of his master plan... or more worryingly... he's doing things by the seat of his pants and he misjudged the expense. In a way, it's in everyone's best interest if he can make money because unless it's truly a labor of love... like someone who wants to talk about movies all the time... why else would someone want to do this? Unless Jim is one of the other high post count posters... his goal must be to make money... either that or he was bored and wanted the challenge of learning how to design a website and saw an opportunity to use imdb's traffic to fuel his experiment.

Anyway, I appreciate the site... hope he finds a way to make it work. All I ask Jim, if you read this is that if your plan is not going smoothly, and you can't see a long term strategy working out... is that you tell us soon before we waste too much time getting this going.

reply

I'm not really bugged by ads. What's bugging me here is that we're not allowed to have small little icons (avatars) by our names when we post because of "load time". But yet, look at the size of these ads! Yeah, you can collapse them if you choose. But they still need to "load" first before you can collapse them. πŸ˜’

reply

That's a really good point. Maybe you could politely bring it up to Jim?

reply

If you are on chrome, just download ad blocker.

reply

Yeay for ad blocker!

Anyways, I think the search function needs to be fixed. If you search "Star Wars" it only returns 3 movies. The search function is not intuitive like IMDb or other movie sites. If people come here and they can't find a movie they will leave and never come back.

reply

if you're using a laptop... we all should turn the adblocker off for the site... it's not very obtrusive... so let the guy make a few bucks. Haven't seen how looks on a phone yet though so maybe that's a different story..

reply

I am all for someone making money but I don't want to have to look at ads. New neon bright LED billboards are going up everywhere in my city. Really annoying at night.

reply

That is your right... I'm not going to give anyone a hard time about using it... but I'm personally not going to promote the use of adblock on a tiny struggling site.

reply

I agree. The search feature needs to be more sensitive. I've learned that if the movie I'm looking for doesn't come up, then I try a new search with the movie's name along with it's year in parentheses.
Ex: Star Wars (1977)
That usually does the trick.

reply

If someone is brand new to the site more than likely they will assume the movie or show isn't on this site since no data was returned for their search. I have learned finally that you have to type the exact movie you are looking for but it does get annoying after a while.

reply

Yup. It needs improving for sure.
