Unfortunately content is NOT king. The teacher Ms. Kim is obsessed with format and structure. Thesis statements, topic sentences, and whether or not to give background as oppose to jumping into the subject. I suddenly feel like George Lucas when he complained that so many people criticizing his work made him feel like he had no freedom to experiment.

shareI think for English class they tend to focus on the format because they are trying to teach the "how" and not so much the "what".
If it was a science class then they might focus more on the content, and on proving your thesis, but an English class is more about how to present your topic properly , regardless of the topic itself.
You need to come up with some quick wit. Tell her that if she can sell you the pen, you might reconsider her views on the matter.
