I know a lot of folks were pretty pissed at IMDb after they shut down the message boards and vowed never to go back or to buy anything from Amazon ever again forever haha. After MovieChat emerged as a replacement for the IMDb forums I haven't really been back that much. This site has basic cast and rating info which is all I really care about. Sometimes I'll visit to look at the Trivia section, but that's kinda rare. Amazon on the other hand I visit every day. I'm a stay at home girl so most of my shopping is online nowadays and there's really no alternative to Amazon...
So do you still visit IMDb? What about Amazon? Why?
Yes, I'm currently on IMDb reading your post with a browser app that puts Moviechat's board at the bottom of IMDb. I do this to keep that old IMDb message board feel I'm used to. I don't believe in punishing myself by not going to IMDb. The people who punish themselves are stupid.
I don't feel like I'm "punishing" myself by boycotting IMDb, as it doesn't feel all that inconvenient not to go. A self-punishing/depriving effect only takes place if something is a loss, but since my principle use of that site was the message boards, and they are gone, not to go is no loss. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not going there, because the thing I loved the most about going there is gone, therefore no loss not to go anymore.
Wiki has all my information needs and only once in a while has it not.
Sad to say, same deal here. I spent Monday running to four different stores, following another store on Sunday--mostly with the intention of screwing Amazon which won't notice it, while I certainly will--and NOT ONE had the item I wanted! If I MUST shop online, I try eBay first, but eventually it boils down to both convenience and price of the particular item, that is, if eBay even has it.
IMDb I avoid like the plague, but if there were a way to visit every day and leave YOU SUCK comments, would do so!
I rarely go to IMDb anymore. Usually only if the summary of a film or show isn't on here, or is truncated. Then I use the link provided. Otherwise, I really don't have any more need to go there.
I have made a few recent purchases on Amazon, but don't go there often either.
Honestly, I still use them around as much as usual. A little less for IMDb, since I can't scroll through message boards there anymore, but it's still useful for Trivia, Reviews, and trying to figure out where I recognize actors/actresses from. Then again, I only lurked in IMDb, so there's that.
I guess I can say that I am a hypocrite. I try to boycott sites, businesses, etc. that I feel are unethical or that have unethical histories.
IMDb, I am not sure is unethical; however, I do still use it. I do things in the film/tv show industry and if I need to look over my credits or add credits, I can do that there. Additionally, I still like IMDb for the trivia feature and Movie Chat does not have that.
Amazon, I have heard, is actually pretty unethical and I actually use to sell things on there as well as buy things. There is an actual Amazon warehouse here, where I reside, and even though they provide jobs, they are pretty bad. In terms of how they do things, it gets a bad reputation because people are not able to take good enough breaks. Did you know that, while you shop on Amazon, there is a person, who works about 12 hour days (they really have no choice, as there is only two shifts of this night and day) and is basically scrutinized over how fast they do their task? If they are not fast enough, they are replaced by another person and really, I hate when our species is used as such. Everyone should be given an 8 hour day, with adequate lunch, bathroom breaks, and not scrutinized into oblivion. I use to think Amazon was great and after hearing about it, it is basically a sweatshop to get that product to you. I will never support Amazon after that, no matter how convenient it is! The current head in charge, forget his name, needs to do some real work to bring ethics back. Even as he does provide jobs, provides a decent wage, and hires humans (instead of automating), which I give him credit for; he needs to learn to respect workers more.
Well, most of this sweatshops thrive in areas, mostly red states, where the cost of living is low. Amazon pays well over the minimum wage; however, the catch is you have to work 12 hour days! It is basically mandatory overtime. In my area, it is mostly for people who, like you said, speak very little English and for people, who may have lost their jobs in this economy. That is the only fall back option. You probably would have to have minimum skill sets as well.
Yes I still use both,but then I never said I wouldn't so I don't feel bad!
IMDb still gives the most comprehensive info on films and TV including cast list and location etc,I do miss individual board info though.
Amazon is far too convenient for my location and lifestyle to give up.
Wikipedia has everything and is more convenient. I use Wikipedia if I want to measure a film up financially. They even have the budget info, which seems so hard to find everywhere else.
But like I said, Wikipedia doesn't always show the complete filmography of an actor or director or the cast list of a movie or tv show, especially not individual episodes.
I have used wikipedia to look up episode lists, if I want to watch that show on a bootleg website. It certainly would not go to lengths to show casts of that episode.
