Do you prefer Practical FX or CGI?

Personally I prefer an equal balance in a movie 🎥

reply

I like anything that looks good and convincing :)

I don't like effects, nor do I care about cinematography..... For me, most of a movie is determined by the writing, the rest is acting.

reply

Agreed.

The extraordinary is in what we do,not who we are.

I personally, have always liked practical FX over CGI. I remember watching Jurassic Park at the theaters when I was a kid and being excited at the new technology. Within the second movie to use "CGI" as their main FX, I began to lose interest. It became a reality where nothing is unachievable, like CGI was the easy route to take instead of ingenuity and creativity that practical FX required. What's the fun if you're not being ingenuitive anymore?

One of my favorite things about Star Wars, other than the cool story, was the special effects. Lucas created a team that really out done themselves in that department, and that revolutionized the way special effects were done.

On top of that, no amount of CGI beats the quality and reality of using shots on a set over a green screen, being on-site, or using puppetry and other animatronics to achieve the same thing a computer simulation could do.

Balance but lean toward practical

I don't prefer one or the other, I believe both are needed. I believe you should try to use regular effects as much as you can and then use CGI when what is desired is too outlandish to really pull off.
Too much CGI doesn't look good to me.

I'll use Star Wars as an example. The originals used regular effects, models for the spaceships, green screens, Yoda and Jabba were elaborate puppets. I think it looked really good for the most part. The running Tauntaun on Hoth (using stop motion) did not look good, neither did that monster Luke fought in Jabba's Palace. CGI would have worked well there.

The prequels went way overboard on the CGI and used it for most of the effects. Yoda looked plastic, some of the ships looked too CGI. They used it too much.

A good blend of the two works best in my opinion.

I like both but I do like a well done real life analog effect. I like model work especially. I even like OLLLLD school stop-motion corniness.
I used to have some friends that did practical FX and model making (many years ago) so I just enjoy the artistry and hands-on craftsmanship that went into it.
I know cgi is an art too, but it doesn't have the same "ooh that's cool" effect to me. You can do anything with cgi.

The vast majority of films I see have no effects but i can always do without CGI.
