Troll in Trending
Some troll is putting offensive content in the trending section again.
Until he figures out a countermeasure, Jim should just delete those titles from the database... it's not like any of them are actually acclaimed or popular movies.
shareI don't know exactly what the problem is, but deleting titles from a database defeats the entire idea of a database. Plus all that will do is give the troll encouragement to get titles deleted, any attention is enjoyed by trolls. People should just click the ignore button so they do not see the troll's posts, therefore making the troll invisible which will defeat YOUR urge to respond to the troll and give him attention.
I am much more interested in titles that there is little info on, than the big titles, so deleting them would be a sin.
I said "until"... he clearly doesn't have the coding expertise to counter it... so it's a simple solution until he does. I know film pretty well, and though I agree with the desire to be thorough... none of these films have any true historical value so they can be restored after he learns how to fix it. We're not talking about Birth of a Nation or Song of the South here.

But that is your opinion that they have no historical value. So should we delete all films that, according to you, have no historical value?
shareI said as a temporary fix, they could remove those titles until either they learn how to properly block the trolls or as someone else said, filter them. This is why I used the word "until". I never suggested they should permanently remove titles even though in the case of these movies, no one would ever miss them.
shareDo you know how hard it is to remove titles and add them back in? Thing is, we cannot let trolls dictate what should and should not be on this site. These movie titles are a part of this site. Sure they are derogatory, BUT they are movie titles.
It's like saying we should withhold licenses from people driving the speed limit. In a perfect world, people would drive exactly the speed limit, but we have people going above the speed limit (almost 10 more mph higher). Sure the people, who are legally driving the speed limit are following the law, BUT they slow us down. It is still the speed limit.
What if I personally wanted to see one of these movies and they became my favorite? What if there was a movie title you liked, that I had said to ban, because I thought it was derogatory? Where do we draw the line?
What if I named my children Fuck, Cunt and Shit and sent them to kindergarten? Would you find it okay for me to force teachers to call their names during roll, in the name of free speech?
I totally agree with your principle... but sometimes you need to be practical to outsmart people.
It's their name. Too bad.
shareIt's hard to ignore the trneding bar which is what the are using to attack the site with.
Also I really don't think filmd with names like cocksucker etc will be missed much.
Perhaps the films with crap, provocative titles like that could somehow have a hold on what is posited to them until the post gets cleared by a Moderator. That way no film gets removed and troll posts can be.
In the long run, those titles will be used by trolls. Better idea would be to filter offensive titles from appearing on trending, even if people are posting on those movie title boards. There are filters in place for that. Of course, no one listens to the obvious easy solutions here.
Sometimes what is obvious to one person isn't obvious or the right way to go.
Hiding those films from trending wouldn't stop people shitposting in them still, so better to delay the posts and only allow through the legitimate ones.
So what if they are being shitposted? At least they wont appear on trending. If you go to the boards of such titles, people have been posting on such boards for years on IMDb! It is nothing new! This trending innovation by Jim is new and hence we are seeing these titles appear. Let them keep on shitposting. No one will even notice!
shareI'm more of a quality rather than quantity type person.
It would be nice to have a place to just discuss film or tv without having the trolling and shitposting that goes on in far too many other sites.
Let all of them come, and make this place popular first.
shareBut seeing posts like that may put people off joining or make some leave.
shareIMDb boards were 60 percent trolls.
shareI never noticed that on there.
shareI am talking about ignoring the individual who is posting offensive stuff, not the trending bar or any particular movie, unless I am misunderstanding how this site works there is an ignore button that I am pretty sure would make that member's posts invisible, therefore nothing to react to.
While I understand that a film may not be socially relevant, if I happen to see it somehow I want to be able to read about it, rate it, and read others comments on it, trolls or no trolls. Personally I have never understood what the problems with trolls are, people say offensive things all day long, why let it get to you? On top of that, what's offensive to me might be something about how Beauty And The Beast is a love story (while it is really about kidnapping a young girl) and that Disney is a good, moral company (which they are not). But if someone wants to spew racist comments to get a rise from someone, it won't be coming from me, because I know full well no troll likes being ignored, and when ignored they go find someone else to harass, just like any other bully.
I know what you are saying and I do ignore them when I see them in general threads. I don't even give them the effort of using the ignore button because I am capable of just ignoring them myself.
What is being referred to is what happens on the trending bar which occasionally gets used by trolls to spam a whole load of innapropriate titles in one go so it is all you see at the top.
(I always wonder how come they know so many of those film titles). Must have really sad and pathetic lives if that is all they can come up with for entertainment, by acting like 12 year olds.
He does not have to delete the movies, just block them from appearing in the trending bar. It's as simple as placing a flag on certain movies or shows that triggers the trending bar to ignore them.
shareOr people could just get over it!
Trolls are all over the Internet. They aren't going away and can't all be filtered. Suck it up people.
I don't get how people allow trolls the get under their skin so much.
Who cares!?!
where the hell is moderator1?
shareSince there is no PM system yet, I replied to Moderator1 in this older thread, and attached a couple pictures.
Hello there. I re-banned Troll and deleted most of his posts. Unfortunately, I can't remove the boards from Trending. Post on your favorite movies/shows (or just things you want to talk about), and that should eventually push the filth out of the Trending bar.
The best thing to do is report posts as they come. Otherwise, if you would rather send a direct report as if a PM, you may email [email protected].
Ah thank you, Moderator1. I did not know we had a dedicated email for that. Very good to have.
Personally (while it's not my place to say and really up to mods and Jim) imo Troll should be permabanned...and his socks as well. They seem to have caused trouble at other message boards too, and have made it clear they are not here to have any serious or friendly discussions.
We ban their IPs indefinitely, but the problem is they keep making (or finding) new addresses. If there were an option to permaban, we would.
shareHey, Moderator 1, one poster changed the number of his posts from 30 to 2001- It was Memorex. (link ) Can you look into it? He hacked it somehow.

There are ways to change IPs. One way people say is by unpluging and replugging in your internet router.
shareAll you have to do is use a proxy server. If mods keep blocking them it will become tedious to troll here though... even the most full on fucking retarded troll will soon get sick of making new accounts.
shareHas anyone got a reply from Jim, its been like 20+ days with no update. Did something happen?
This is worrying
