Certain subforums that were very popular on IMDB are quiet right now

Movie Awards - 6 days ago (and it's really only GERARD KENNELLY 123 in there, bless his/her heart, trying to get something going again)

Film General - 1 day ago, but really empty.

Box Office - 23 days ago

I know a lot of the Movie Awards people went to a specific version of freeboards (not IMDB2 but another one, but they might be on IMDB2 as well)

The Box Office group seem to have went over to the BoxOfficeTheory boards. And many of them posted in Film General.

Maybe they don't know about MovieChat yet. Anyone post on those other forums and able to give them a heads up? It seems like such a shame that all of their older discussions are still there and they don't seem to know about it (or maybe some of them do, but feel situated and comfortable where they are?)

Yeah, it seems like a lot of subforums are pretty sparse. Probably because most people just look at Trending and General Discussion. I've tried to get a few quieter boards going, with limited success.

Me, too, although I have pretty bad judgement about what would be a good, hopping discussion. :-) I keep posting though. I'm only a member at one other place (but have only been posting here since I found moviechat), so I'm still trying to figure out how to post and raise awareness for people who would really enjoy it here.

Is there maybe a list of the alternative sites, something comprehensive, that could be posted and we could post in their general forums to say hi and let people know?

It seems like a number of threads in General Discussion could/should really be on the specific movie or show boards instead. But I also understand that a lot of people do like Leia said and just put their comments in General. It makes sense if you consider that early on, when the individual movie pages were first imported or whatever you call it, they had no comments. (Hey, who wants to be first?? You go. No, you go.) Maybe people got in the habit of just going to General.

Yeah, I definitely noticed that, too. Especially posts about new trailers or things delving into Politics.

It seems like the general discussion board is all we really need on this site. LOL

Those subforums were made for 250.000 monthly visitors of IMDb. I think Jim should join some of them together, or deactivate a few untill there's a need for them. The way they are now, it's never gonna be enough traffic on them untill Moviechat has way more members.

I think he did mention somewhere that he was going to combine or simply remove some of the quieter sub boards, that he'd have a poll or something to see which ones users want to keep or delete.
We definitely don't need the IMDb-specific ones anymore. Personally, I don't understand the need for the "-box" boards.

You mean Sandbox and Soapbox? There is also a Watercooler... those 3 could easily be joined in one (or scrapped altogether, but let's say joined for now cause some people do use them occasionally)

I would join them and keep one of them (let's say Sandbox), cause if we scrap them, we wouldn't be able to tell people in General section "this topic is Sandbox material, post it there" when they post a stupid thread. 😋

I feel the same way. I'm all for preserving some of the other ones, even though they have low traffic. Like the "Workshop" ones for directors/actors/writers is actually very cool. It's not as hopping a place as Movie Awards, but it's a rare place where budding filmmakers and writers can meet others. I've dropped in there occasionally and see them having really nice discussions and helping each other out with resources.

Things like that should be kept.

But Sandbox, Watercooler and Soapbox....I honestly wouldn't even care if Jim just deleted that into the trashbin. Was there anything in there that was worth saving? Every time I looked in there, there was spamming, one guy shouting to himself, inappropriate material and just crazy rambling going on.

For the other ones that are going slow right now, I'd also go with what Apis said. Combine or deactivate, and bring it back when MovieChat traffic picks up again (and maybe add a Search feature in the future so people can more easily find their old posts or something specific).

Oh, there is definitely some good stuff in some of the subforums. Never said there isn't. But some of it we don't really need, either.

Make threads on it in the General Discussion and ask if they would like to go to that message board. It would be way easier if you could have them click on a link and there was a thread for that, making links, and it is all the way to the bottom on one of the million pages all ready created by all these threads. Find at your own risk.
