It maybe labeled "posts" and "replies" but if you look at the columns, you can see that "posts" are the threads you started, and "replies" are all the 'posts' you've posted.
You are saying that 'It may be labeled "posts" and "replies", BUT if you look at the columns, you can see that "posts" are the threads you started, and "replies" are all the "posts" you've posted.'
Even if that may be true, you are making it your connotation (your version of what YOU think is classified as a post). If you clearly look at your profile page, it says "posts" and "replies". That's it. There is no "you can see that posts are the threads you started and replies are all the posts you have posted" because it does not say that. It is a connotation based on what you classify as a post.
From the evidence we have to work with, a reply is a reply and a post is a post.
It is about specificity. When it is defined on your profile page as two separate things, we cannot just assume that both those things are posted and thus, fit the definition of a post.
So clearly, when it was said that the number is the number of posts, it is clearly wrong. Replies and posts make up that number.
Are you a robot that only understands things literally? Like, if I called you a pin head, would you go get a measuring tape, measure your head, and when you determined that your head is of normal shape and size, you'd conclude my statement of you being a pin head as erroneous?
Dude, you know what a thread is, right? If I started calling all Threads as Posts, would you just assume that the word "Thread" is no longer relevant?
We might as well take things as is or we could slight everything and think only in connotations and other peoples' opinions. If we did that, we would not have our own opinions and everything would be based on opinion.
Replies and posts are fact because you can see both of those are named, as they are, on your profile page. If we take your "threads" term, it would still be wrong because nothing on your profile page lists anything about threads.
What makes up the number beside your account name?
Replies + posts = [number]
Simple as that.
You do not have to agree with it, but it's fact. Tell Jim to change everything to replies or posts.
Bro, I'm not arguing that Replies + Posts = Number next to name.
What I'm saying is, Threads started by the user are labeled as POSTS. That's it. I think it's labeled wrong. You're a robot who only understands things that are LITERALLY published. Meaning, if Jim all of a sudden changed POSTS to THREADS, then you would be calling all Threads as Threads and not POSTS.
Look at your profile page. What are the two things that make up your number? Got dang, it is like you guys are totally putting opinions on everything when the answer is right in front of you.
If you say that POST is a valid term and that is what the number, next to your account name represents; I am going to throw the term troll on you. You guys cannot possibly be that dense.
And I would think you would post replies and threads; however, you are not answering the question which is "Number in brackets after names??"
This site is not the be all end all of message board terminology. It's a fan site made by one person with a lot of mistakes. Topics are NOT called POSTS. Just because they are called it here, does not mean that is correct.
I agree with you to a point. Most would agree that OP means either the original post or the original poster.
A thread has an OP (original poster) and is also an OP (original post).
So it's not incorrect to call threads made by someone a "post," and people can also "post" replies or responses.
Most of us understand the number behind our names here on MC is a combination of threads we've created, and replies to the threads others have created.
But because it is that ONE person's site and his terms for now, we have to follow it and answer questions based on what it is.
See, anything that you write in your posts are opinion. The best an opinion could ever be is suggested to be true, based on the number of people who support you (assuming that your terminology fits what the majority would agree with). In this case, Jim could very well change the number to represent posts if he changed both of those labels on our profile pages. However, since that is not the case and that is what the brackets, after our account names represent; it is really that simple: posts + replies = [number]
Except it's not my "opinion" at all. These are facts about message board terminology. One site does not change that because of an error. Things get POSTED on a message board. Topics and replies. So back to the original point = A reply is a post. End of story. All your mental gymnastics to not seem like a fool won't change that.
These are facts? Let me see the evidence of these facts. Two people on here write that their opinions on "message board terminology" are factual. In fact, I have no idea how you could argue with the fact of what the bracket number actually is. It literally is posts and replies. LOL
My fact is the terminology used on this site. No matter what is said, the number will always be "posts" and "replies" because that is what it is calculating. You cannot change that no matter what your terminology is.
"Can I log into my old user name from IMDb? So if someone replied to a post I made from my old (archived) IMDb posts, I would know about it?"
Nope JanX9, but I think that's a great idea. If you kept the same username as you had at IMDb, I think that they should allow us the option to merge our old IMDb-posts into our current accounts.
I don't know if it's possible, but if so, there's at least 2 of us that would love to see it happen.
I'd love that, but I don't see how it could be done. Jim doesn't have access to IMDB's data to confirm XXXX on IMDB is the same XXXX here on MC.
I also wish that when we replied to posters pre-IMDB boards debacle, there was some way they'd be able to get an email notification, but, same problem.
Hey JanX9, do you agree with me that it can be done?
I understand that there's no way of knowing for sure if I'm the same "SoggyBottom" or if you're the same "JanX9" from IMDb, but so what?
If some people get stuck with posts that belonged to somebody else, they can ignore them (or delete them if they bug them that much to see them in their posting-histories).
I think bringing as many of the "dead" posts back to life as possible would be a great thing for MovieChat!
OT: I replied to one of your old posts on the White Palace board, 5 years later, which is a new record. Bonus points for it being a reply on an entirely different site!
Thanks Catbookss! I'll go reply to it. I love that movie (although it's been over a decade since I last saw it)
Hey, are you in the lead right now when it comes to who has the most posts? I think Strannger and Leia are up there, but you're definitely one of the leaders.
go to your profile and count the posts and replies, they will ad up to the number next to your name, and it will change as you add posts or/and replies,
