Lurkers Vs. Posters

This has been talked about on many a board; but I thought I would start a thread about it. How many of you were lurkers on IMDB, and how many of you were regular posters? I had been a somewhat regular poster from about 2004-2010, and then I pretty much just lurked after that. Most of the information I was seeking someone had already supplied, so there was no need to really comment. They say that you never realize what you have until you do not have anymore, and that makes me wish I had posted more those last few years. However that regret is subsiding, because I am really enjoying the communication on MovieChat! I was just interested who was in the same boat I was. Also I was curious about who came here and was not an IMDB refugee.

50/50 depending on the board. On my home boards, I was a regular poster and mostly off topic or just having general conversations. But on I would lurk other movie/tv shows boards to see what type of discussions were had or what people thought of a particular movie, etc. And sometimes, I might post here and there on other boards, but mostly I stuck to posting only on my home board.

reply

I only lurked on IMDb, not even made an account, but I joined here soon after the boards shut down.

I had an IMDB account for two years before they shut down the boards,i posted comments in Resident Evil and tomb raider boards

Like most people, I would go to a specific board after watching a movie to read what some people had to say about it.

And occasionally I would post a question, or post my thoughts on it, or reply to somebody else's post.

Same here but I used IMDb for a few years before realizing the message board were there.

I had an IMDB account a long time ago but I changed my email address so I couldn't log in anymore and I just stopped after that, I signed up here as soon as I heard about it.

A lot of people who registered here in the early days said the same thing, and that they had been lurkers. I had no idea there were so many lurkers on the boards there.

IMDB refugee here. I was a regular poster on several boards, and then skipped around depending on which film or show I'd just seen and was curious what others had to say.

I'm also very much enjoying the conversations here on MovieChat!

"Most of the information I was seeking someone had already supplied, so there was no need to really comment." This was me. I was a big time lurker. But I read the boards every time I watched a movie for over 15 years, and so when they suddenly were announced as closing I had that don't know what you've got til its gone feeling I guess.

reply

I told col personally, that lurkers didn't stare at the credits for hours on end, they read the message boards. But he didn't respond to me. : \

I was just a lurker at IMDb. I'm always late to the party - not up on current releases because I don't have cable TV and don't stream either. I wait for things to hit DVD and borrow from the library so I looked at comments to find things that sounded interesting. By the time I see something it has been pretty well commented on so I didn't feel I had anything much to add. But it's been fun to help build MovieChat from the beginning. I'm still amazed at how much Jim has been able to accomplish in such a relatively short time.

Another lurker here!! Had an account with the nameless one, and spent a lot of time getting other people's ideas about stuff, but hardly ever joined in a discussion. Probably because the only time I did, on TWD board, I never got a lucid reply !! There were some sweeties on the Buffy and Angel boards though.

reply

I'm with you on TWD board. Tried it once, didn't try again.

reply

I never did go to TWD board, although I heard about it. I did go to the GoT board a couple of times. What a bizarre place.

reply

With the trolls and the cliques they didn't seem very inviting. I'm sure there were some great people there, but it didn't seem to be worth the hassle honestly.

reply

You mean on TWD board, or GoT? There was a very strong clique on the GoT board, and a lot of trolling. Come to think of it, the two groups were the same as far as I could tell.

reply

I mean both. And from my observations there was quite a bit of that all over.

reply

Makes sense. I admit I found a few of the posters on the GoT board to be at times clever and amusing, but they were so full of themselves in the couple of times I checked it out. Don't know if the same was true of those on TWD board or not.

Have to agree, there was quite a bit of that on the majority of the boards.
