Movie Titles on Home Page

The site is looking much better now, but I was thinking of ways we can increase posts for movies, tv, and actors since the general board is already quite active.

First, I think the home page should include a list of current films (maybe ranked by box office) and upcoming films. There are many other film and tv related lists that can be imported to this site. I admit to being a lists junkie.

Second, we should expand the trending section so it includes different categories. I also favor a ranking system that is similar to IMDb's starmeter but for boards and not just celebs.

The best part is that there are other sites besides IMDb that include information on upcoming releases, so we don't have to give IMDb any traffic.

Great ideas!

I think the current/upcoming movies/tv could definitely promote more posting on those topics. They seem to be the more active ones to begin with.

I agree that the Trending section should be expanded somehow. What sort of categories do you mean? What exactly is a starmeter? (I never actually had an account on IMDb, just lurked)

I mean that there should be 3 sections for movies, tv, and people.

The IMDb starmeter measured popularity of celebrities by number of page visits, and was updated weekly. I think we could do something similar for the boards (and not just for celebrities), while still displaying most recent activity.

Alright. Those sound good.

But there are other things that I think are higher priority on the update list, like PMs and blocking.

Leia I agree

Starmeter was merged with ranking. Even if you were an amateur actor/actress on there, like I was, and had some credits; you could see your rank. Starmeter was the top of the top, like top 10. These would rank the celebrities in terms of publicity and how often (IMDb said) their profiles were clicked on (I highly doubt it was just that. I am sure there was some back end pay that sweetened the deal and put one actor/actress over another actor/actress in terms of being publicized).

For this website, it would probably be based on top fan, however, I think it would get out of hand because just what exactly would it be based on? There were ideas about posts and messages being upvoted, so I guess it could be on that.

Perhaps there is a way to just factor in total number of posts per day or week. I think it would create more discussion because for someone who may not have started out with the intent of starting or continuing a discussion, those lists can help them end up on a movie or actor page. I see IMDb also ranks a movie's popularity on the front page. Of course, it'll favor current films or upcoming releases, but it'll definitely help.

But then wouldn't people just troll in trying to get a certain # of posts in? It would not exactly regulate against posts that had substance vs. posts that are just one worded or typed up to fulfill that requirement.

reply

Hopefully, that will work itself out in time as necessary tools are put in place such as having reported or flagged posts not factoring into the data. But if that's someone's primary motivation to post, it shouldn't be a problem provided they have something to say.

I also had an idea of creating a list of most discussed instead of or in addition to most popular, which would principally factor in the length of threads. On imdb, it was typical for longer threads to have the most interesting discussion. These threads usually stayed at the top while inane posts quickly got buried. It's also bad netiquette to continually bump the same thread, which would inspire people to instead come up with really interesting threads and responses.

I think the Trending section is fine as it is for now. Expanding it is a good idea, but some time in the future, not right now.

reply

Trendings should also be listed vertically, by title, not horizontally. That would definitely expand the trending section.

reply

The only problem for that is that it would make Mobile version a bit clunky. I'm fine with it being horizontal, but maybe a link to see more or something.

We're all ready on mobile now? O_o

I was just thinking along the lines of laptop and desktop users......

reply

Lol, yeah. I usually use my iPhone to get online, otherwise iPad. There's no app or anything, though, which is fine. It just looks different, I think. I haven't actually opened MovieChat on a laptop/computer yet, though.

Good ideas.
