We need notification
both TMDb and IMDb2 have notifications when someone replies to your thread. Also maybe a like button

A Like button would be nice, but notifications are essential.
Has Jim said that notifications are in the works? In this day and age, it's just an expected function. We gave IMDB a pass because the software was from the stone age.
Anyone even know what forum software he's using here?

Completely custom. Built everything from the ground-up.

shareYep, all I think we need to get serious with posting is the ability to reply to specific posts, and notification of replies to our posts. So just one more update to go! It's also dawned on me how prudent it is that Jim rolled out nested replies before he did notifications, because if it had been done in the opposite order, with people replying to posts that are displayed in single inline threads, it could be unclear which post is best to reply to, leading to people getting notifications for replies that may not make sense. I feel like we're in good hands here, the execution of this site has been thoughtful.
I'm very wary of a like or upvote feature. I think they tend to make people less willing to voice what may be an unpopular or minority opinion. I'm all for candid, robust, diverse, unpredictable conversations and debates, so I'd hope that every post get to be received on its own merits with as little pre-determined bias as possible. I guess you could make the argument that a post with fifty "Great post, I agree!" replies could also have the same dampening effect on a different opinion, but at least the act of having to read a post before you can judge it, and having to type a reply to voice a reaction, would more likely result in a few seconds' more contemplation of said post, and verbal conversation. Okay, I think that's all my thoughts on that. :D

shareI can see the appeal of Reddit's upvote/downvote system, because a lot of good posts tend to stay more prominent as a consequence, but I'm not sure how it changes my point about what might be minority or unpopular opinions, and being a feature that makes it easier (maybe too easy?) for people to simply "participate by clicking/voting" rather than taking some time to read everyone's posts and maybe form their own responses. Also, I've noticed on Reddit that sometimes a post won't get the benefit of upvotes because it was made late in the life of the thread and a lot of people had stopped following the conversation, or an earlier post had covered similar points, but the later post could be just as valid and worth reading, if not more so, or offer something new.
It also might become more apparent whether an upvote/downvote system makes sense for this site as we get a better idea of the type of activity and users we end up having.
I don't use Reddit much, though. Is there maybe an example over there of how the lack of an upvote/downvote system would've been definitely woeful?

shareYes, I feel the same way about having a pure message board. I love how it can just be about your thoughts and ideas, and as a place takes off, it's strangers from everywhere getting to understand each other and engage with each other on the basis of their thoughts and ideas. Yes, once upon a time! Along the way I think that spirit got a bit lost in the culture of Facebook and Twitter (though I do think those things have their own, different value) with people just talking within their own established social circles, and 140-character tweets with more punctuation marks than readable English, and the need to say something right now at the same time as everyone else, rather than just taking your time, being real, and being completely okay with silence, too. That's why I like this place; I feel like it's conducive to a good, healthy balance here.
I also agree it's a noticeable differentiator.

isn't CONTENT more important than options?
Notifications while on the site are cool, but I hate getting inundated with them on my email. So, if there are notifications I also hope there is the option to NOT receive them through that.
During browsing, it'd be nice though.
I can understand where you're coming from, Dreamers. Personally I prefer receiving notifications via email because I like the option of knowing right away when someone has replied to me. And to avoid getting distracted by emails, I set up dedicated folders from every source that I expect to regularly get email from, so that when I get those emails, I can make that judgement as to whether I want to read those emails at that moment. (Kind of like screening calls.)
I also like it because it gives me time to think about what I might like to say, before I have the time to get on the site. My time is often fractured, so if I only got my notifications while I'm on the site, I might only have the time to read the replies before signing off.
It'd be nice to have both options. :)
Yes, that's why I said it'd be good to have the choice to opt out of that because I know a lot of people like that or prefer seeing/getting their notifications that way. I wouldn't want to strip them of that, I'd just also like to not have to be subjected to never-ending notifications blowing up my email and phone, haha.
How you deal with it is smart though! I'd do it your way if did use my email for that sort of thing.

shareI hear ya, Dreamers. I forgot to mention, in case you do ever decide to use your email that way, I set up rules for automatically filtering emails into the folders, after creating the folders. (I went back and read my post and realized how it might not make any sense! How would I decide not to read an email if I had to look at the email in the first place?) Wow, the edit button will be great.
