I miss the local TV stations that played on the UHF channels in the pre-cable
days. They broadcast from the Philadelphia area and played scratchy old movies;
old Our Gang/Laurel and Hardy/Three Stooges/Chaplin films; commercials for small businesses; local talk shows; live-action kid's TV shows;
and "Chiller Theater" type shows featuring live hosts (one in the Philly area
that I remember was "Dr. Shock," a Zacherle knock-off).
Before the WB, CW,
and the Fox network, there were some good local VHF stations, too. These
broadcast from NYC and consisted of old movies (a guaranteed annual showing
of the 1951 Scrooge, Miracle on 34th Street,, March of the
Wooden Soldiers, and every Thanksgiving, "Million Dollar Movie"'s triple
feature of giant ape movies (King Kong, Son of Kong, and Mighty
Joe Young, because nothing signifies Thanksgiving better than huge,
rampaging apes); live-action kiddie TV shows ("Romper Room,""Bozo," "Birthday House," "Wonderama,"
"The Sandy Becker Show," "Officer Joe Bolton" and "Captain Jack" with his
Popeye cartoon show) and late-night horror movie
shows ("Chiller Theater," "Fright Night," and "Creature Features"), and various
cartoon shows. And the local talk shows with David Susskind and Joe Franklin.
I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!
Hewwo.
