Are cop/ detective shows overrated??
I think so
shareThere are a lot of them. Its kind of like once you seen one you pretty much seen them all, it look like all these cop/detective shows trying to compete with Law & Order.
shareAs America continues its race towards extreme conservatism, cop shows become increasingly important as propaganda to reinforce the policy that authority figures are always right. The problem is that greater quantity rarely leads to greater quality.
There are some that are better than others, but for me, I am kinda over the cop/detective stuff. Have been over it for a good while now. Maybe if there wasn't so dang many it would still hold a little interest, but shoot, it's all you see some days/nights. They have beat it to death.

So what?
shareI find them so formulaic and boring. Plus I find all the murder and violence in these shows not something I enjoy watching.
shareI agree Angie
shareA little, yes.

Sure, they are, but these are relatively inexpensive to produce. The stories are simple enough for even the worst writers to work on. All they do is create a ridiculously implausible situation fill it with some excitement, and they have a show for Friday. All you have to do now is throw some current event elements just for marketing purposes, these will be mostly forgotten by the time syndication reruns start anyway. Each episode is a complete stand alone story so these shows do not require a significant group of casual viewers to watch continually. A decent base audience can easily carry a series for many years, and episodes generally hold up much better than sitcoms that use topical or lame jokes to remain relevant. It would not surprise me at all, if the productions have a template already made out.
Television will always have lousy talk shows, pathetic late night infomercials, (real)ity shows and cop dramas. Usually, you can get all four just by watching the local news broadcast . Things will not change unless someone comes up with a different profession with more excitement, variety and buget friendly storylines. Sixty plus years of cop shows pretty much confirms that there are no viable alternatives that can realistically last more than a few seasons at a time.
