What I like about Soaps

Hi,I'm a guy from Greece,37 years old,I've been watching soaps regularly for twenty years,I mean the daytime stuff, not the night, weekly stuff like Dallas and Dynasty which were also nice to watch.I think that Santa Barbara was the best thing that ever happened in daytime television. The fine combination of plot twists, dialogue, great acting and humor was simply brilliant.I know you Americans were not very fond of the show,I don't get that,it's just beyond me,anyway, let me get myself to the point.I watch Y&R for eighteen years,I love it,I don't always like all the storylines but as a professional actor I love to observe and analyze a fine acting job and I really believe that the show really delivers great acting from its leading men and women.I think that a real actor is a stage actor and the lead role in a daytime soap can really test what a real actor is made of.The amount of pages that they have to memorize in such limited time astounds me.I don't know if I could ever do that.It would be a great challenge, that's for sure.Anyway,I love Y&R actors mostly for their work, the show itself comes second for me.I think that the soap genre is stupid in general, the soap structure is an insult to any intelligent person's mind like the age inconsistency between fathers and sons etc.I love the slow pacing, the camera close ups, even the smell the fart acting sometimes.Y&R has improved my English a great deal with fancy words and phrases that I had never heard before, maybe because soap actors don't talk too fast.I don't care if I lose an episode or two, whenever it rains it is sheer joy for me to spend an hour in the afternoon watching that show. Thanks for reading.

Santa Barbara is considered one the best here in the U.S. too. Y&R has been a disaster lately, they have made a mess of one of my favorite soaps! Changing Exec. Producers wasa big CBS blunder. Lynn Marie Latham destroyed the show! Damn her! Her replacements are not much better job either, they just killed off Brad Carlton!

Daytime soap have always been a great training ground for actors, especially when they were done "live". If you're curious, look up The Secret Storm or the Edge of Night on YouTube which ha some kinescope extracts from the '50' and '60's. Santa Barbara was a delicious show to follow and watch ... good storyline arcs and excellent acting. I'm shocked to hear Y&R killed Brad ... what have the producers been smoking? That's the kind of ratings gimmick you expect from network interference. Although I did look askance when everyone thought Kay Chancellor dead again (they did that 30 years ago)! These days I have taken up One Life to Live again, mainly because despite really dumb storylines (avaracious David Vickers a converted mystic??? once again exchanged babies??? an INHERITED multiple personality???) but the acting is decent and the cast, male and female, is comprised of some of the most attractive people on TV. Perhaps I should go back to Y&R. LOL!

Thanks for sharing your views, evangr03. Just because a soap has been cancelled, it doesn't mean it wasn't well loved. I totally agree with you abotu SANTA BARBARA. The show broke all kinds of new ground in the field of daytime and it always cleaned up at the Daytime Emmy Awards, particularly its writing team, which was the best in the business. I am also a Y&R fan who has watched the show from the beginning and though flawed, like most soaps, it does have some magnificent actors on it who do keep me tuned in.
