Fawlty Towers vs Blackadder
Putting aside sketch comedy and the god-like respect for Monty Python, Blackadder (particularly series 2 and 4) and Fawlty Towers are, for me, the pinnacle of British comedy. In fact, I'd say they're equally the greatest shows in the history of television. They're untouchable. I may prefer to re-watch other Britcoms, and TV shows in general, more frequently, but I'll always consider these two shows the absolute Grand Masters. Kind of like how many people (mostly males) consider The Godfather the greatest film ever made (I don't) but they probably don't re-watch it as often as other films in their collection. Although, I always do a Fawlty Towers and Blackadder marathon once a year.
Generally I favour Blackadder, and not because there's more content, but I can't deny the writing genius of John Cleese and Connie Booth, so they come out equally on top as the greatest shows ever. Actually, these two shows aren't even my personal favourites, but I regard them as the ultimate very best in comedy. For those who like either of these two, where do they rank in your 'best shows/comedies' list?
