Episodes

Anyone else enjoying this series? It is a slow burner, but I stuck with it because I liked the cast and it has really grown on me. It isn't 'hilarious' as such but it is bleakly amusing, and the last couple of episodes were rather touching. Of course, it is a joint US/ UK production rather than purely a britcom but I think it has more similarities to British sitcoms whilst using the settings of an American sitcom, and pokes a little fun at both of them, I think.

For those that haven't seen it, it is about two British writers who have had a successful series back home which is now being made as a pilot in the US, so they move out to LA to work on it, only to find that their show is being completely changed by the network.

I think it's pretty interesting because although it is written by American writers it is done much more in the British style, with the same writers writing every episode and doing it as a short season (6 or 7 episodes I believe) rather than a whole team of writers working on a season of 20+ episodes. Through the two writers the series is about we see just how much their vision is changed by having a whole writing team, producers and actors insisting on changes so that their original idea is changed beyond recognition. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the American writers have perhaps been burnt by the standard way of making a sitcom in the US and were inspired to write this.

I love it. You're right about it being a bit of a slow-burner, but by episode three I was completely hooked and there have been quite a few laugh-out-loud moments for me (although I'd also say you're right about it being more bleakly amusing than hilarious). I think Tamsin Greig in particular is fabulous.
I just watched last night's episode on iPlayer, and I have to say I'm glad I forgot to put it on last night. I think watching that ending on Valentine's Day would have broken my heart a little.

I can't sing the songs that you sing, I can't find the gorgeous words.

It just doesn't work, at all. American sitcom humour and British comedy are like, polar opposites, trying to mix them will never ever work. And Tamsin's character is one of the most atrocious in any TV series ever. LeBlanc is at least entertaining.

Have not seen it, and don't get Showtime, so I may never get to. But, I would definitely like to see it. Wholly different plot/concept to my experience. And I can see endless potential for humor, just in the back and forth bashing between the Brits and the Americans.

Will definitely watch out for it!
