Please help me find this show!

It was a British comedy.

My brother and I viewed it during a trip to London in the summer of 1997.

The plot of the show revolved around an election. More of a local election than a national election.

I distinctly remember the candidate trying to get sympathy votes by caring for a guy in a wheelchair. He was under the impression that the man had been hurt doing something courageous but it turned out he was injured in a ski accident.

It had a large cast and a few separate story lines.

I know this is pretty thin but I'll be forever in your debt if you can help!

Oh and by the way the show was hilarious.

Could it have been "The New Statesman"? I don't remember that specific storyline, but it sounds typical of the lead character, Alan B'Stard. The time you saw it is a bit late, but British TV repeats things endlessly.
One problem is that we do a lot of politically-set sitcoms, and none of them treat politicians with any respect. Your storyline could drop into any of them.

Another might be "Yes Minister"

"You ain't the devil. I saw the devil on TV last night, and he had a English accent."

Definitely sounds like the new statesman to me - Tory MP alan b'stard played brilliantly by Rik Mayall :)
