DOC MARTIN
Quirky, but once you get used to it (and him) great fun (with some serious undertones) - terrific cast.
"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."

"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."
I agree. It was lovely stuff.
shareBump.
"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."
BUMP again - why is there no discussion about this terrific show?
"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."
And again!
"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."
Doc Martin has no 'filters' - he says what's on his mind, and usually it's the things we wish we had the guts to say.
"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."
I wish I liked it. The cast is, as you say, remarkable. I simply can't warm to the characters, I don't care enough about them to get sucked in. I have tried. I usually enjoy Martin Clunes hugely, but I find his character utterly unattractive, I have no empathy with his girlfriend or her mother...the policeman is quite sweet, and the son of the bloke with the restaurant interested me in one of the episodes.......sorry.

The characters, however, just aren't the sort that one can ever warm up to I suppose. Even Miss Glasson, the physical epitome of what I admire in certain English gals, remained an annoying twit in some ways. Doc Martin himself is not meant to be liked at all, surely.
The replacement policeman for PC Mark Mylow was probably meant to provide a bit of comic relief but was too much of a buffoon to be a credible enforcer of the law. Bert Large's son Al could have been the "voice of reason and sanity" within the ensemble cast but he wasn't given enough to do overall. The series of receptionists for the surgery were each interesting in their own way but they left as soon as they could have become really good characters. I can't fault the players really just the play itself.
Still, I stuck around - if only to see how it would turn out. A really quirky show indeed. Maybe the reason nobody comments much about it here is because it's so odd to pin the show down exactly.
Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.
My one problem with it though is that Stephanie Cole isn't in every episode. She's a real gem!
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
